It's certain to go, on the next session . . . .

(Often heard when a dig's running short of willing bodies.  ;) )

From a policeman we once bumped into post-trip: "It's dark, is it safe to go caving a night time?"

Erm! NO.

When some over-enthusiastic type takes the wrong direction out of Ireby Fell entrance on a dark and snowy winter's evening, luckily kindly farmer drove some back to collect the cars, a few miles I think, don't imagine he was deeply impressed though.

On that theme 'it's practically wide open', is a running phrase of digs with Badlad, Franklin et al.

Walking out from Penwyllt one very misty day looking for Pant Mawr Pot. Norman Martell says after about an hour and a half "I think we have overshot. That is a coal seam in the stream bed".

"It's a dry cave."
has got to be a classic. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't get your ears wet, it's a dry cave. Others on the trip may disagree and make their displeasure known.

"First you must conceive that the earth is everywhere full of windy caves, and bares in its bosom a multitude of fissures and gulfs and beedling, precipitous crags. You must also picture that under the earth's back, many buried rivers with torrential force roll their waters mingled with sunken rocks."

"You won't need knee pads"

I think there was a series of T-shirts produced in the US with a title like Great Caving Lies.

I always remembered when on exped in Serbia one of the Serbs said

"The caves are not like rabbits, they won't run away"

Always stuck with me when I need to convince myself to go to Inglesport instead of caving

Indeed there was. 'Great Lies of Caving', by Jerry Wallace. 'You don't need kneepads' was no. 3. I have one somewhere.
Some others were No. 1, It?s right off the road; No. 2, We?ve got plenty of rope; No. 4, It?s not wet
