IMHO I don't see anything wrong with modded builders helmets (should have a Y strap though). Presumably they should protect you from a falling brick size object, anything bigger will do pretty serious damage that quite likely a pukka caving lid wouldn't save you from anyway. Save your dosh and buy some decent lights.

Wouldn't buy secondhand for the very good reasons mentioned above.

A builders helmet may protect your head from a small object falling a short distance, a bit of a bang on the ceiling, but will it protect your head in case of a fall, even with a Y strap? I doubt it.

Head injuries underground tend to result from falls rather than falling objects. Helmet normally sold for use in caving are deigned for climbing and will be far better than a builders helmet in this respect.
