childish taping argument

{SPLIT FROM CARLSWARK TOPIC}

What the F**K is everyone moaning about? Yellow arrows? what about all that horrable RED and WHITE plastic tape  around mud formation, ok the odd formation here and there but that barrier tape has started to appear all over the place and i think it looks sh*t!

it is not about how crap the tape looks at all and i believe the people who complain about tape need to open their eyes a bit more when they are stomping around passages.

The tape is there to protect formations that would get trampled on by the cavers that we see week in week out. perhaps those people who complain about these things would like to slow down a tad and take in the ENTIRE cave not just the stalagmites and stalagtites.

But as a general rule as i have said tape=formations.
what about animals?

and in fact i would like to ask those who complain about tape what they actually get out of caving? Exercise, route finding (brain workout), the joy of seeing formations, the thrill of getting in and out, crawls, mud, seeing amazing creatures and formations, finding more passages.

I'm not complaining about tape, I'm complaining about red and white tape. I don't like cave passages looking as if the gas company are relaying the gas main, with sprayed lines and barrier tape all over the place. Orange reflective tape is far better.

ahh ok i didn't know the complexities of different types of tape, sorry, but i suppose 1 type of tape may be better than another

Both visually, and environmentally. The reflective tape is also easier to handle and position in my opinion.

It all looks like rubish to me and should not be there! If people disgard rubish and plastic food rapers about caves someone would moan, well  i would rather have a cracked mud floors walked on than see plastic barrier tape littered everywhere.

Trampled cracked-mud-floors look rubbish too, so get over it you troll.

I will agree that other forms of tape are preferable to that red&white stuff.

food rapers
Doughnuts? Jelly? Cucumbers? They should be locked up for doing things like that in caves.  ;) (sorry, couldn't resist)

i would agree if it were 'littered' around. i would not be a fan if i heard stories of tape making its way into sumps so that divers got tangled up in it but when it is well placed and not excessively used then it's ok.

in big caves you sometimes only get a small section to walk in, so if you're actually looking at the cave then the tape should only be around your feet and so you WON'T see it unless of course your looking at your feet!

Not as sh*t as the broken, muddy formations that could be left behind. Don't bring your bitching here, if you have a genuine interest in discussing taping then start a new thread. We're doing our bit here & it was nice to have a thread not full of trolling boll*x.

At the risk of upsetting Pete K (no offence intended, keep up the good work!) I'l l reply to the following on taping.

By all means admire the cave, that is of course why we visit isn't it? But to not look down is surely missing out a part of the cave? The floor can be just as interesting as the walls and roof...
And if you can't walk in a narrow strip and look around you then god help anyone if you ever walk through a town on a pavement, you'll have people walking into you and cars swerving to avoid you as you weave about. I'm sorry but that's a pathetic excuse, you should look where you walk, common sense isn't it?

Yes, but I guess the pavement you walk on as opposed to the road you don't walk on, is defined in some way at least.  In a pristine virgin cave there is no definition, so you have to start some where once its discovered, or else the the whole lot gets wandered over and trashed.  I'm still sufficiently new to caving to experience a sense of humbleness of the power of nature and history when I walk, crawl or squeeze through passages and sediments that are thousands of years old in rocks that are millions of years old. I know it will never last that way unless the place is never visited........but that's another thread!

Why the f*** would you need to tape hangover hole, hardly anyone goes in there and its just a breakdown chamber, if one of you self appointed taping muppets started taping paracetomole, I would hunt you down and stuff it so far up your arse it came out of your eyes

i feel this is now another UKCaving argument where there is no need for one.

carlswalk is not hangover hole.

tape protects formations.

some caves have too much tape and "the wrong kind" but thats something to bring up with the conservators of those caves.

What has caused this sudden outburst against tape? More importantly what has it got to do with cleaning painted arrows off cave walls? Would you two like those left alone, do you need them to get through Carlswark?
I'm sure tape has its places and uses, I don't really care, I'll keep on the right side of it, I'm not the one making the decision to place it. I like the idea of a white picket fence though - or barbed wire.

It's trolling and it's moronic. I think this site is particularly bad at not controllling it.
Can't we use a pile of left over red and white tape to tie them up and keep them quiet??

Peter - I've got better things to be doing with my day that mediating pathetic, petty little arguments on this site.

Sound like the site needs more moderators. Its pathetic trolling that turns people off. Traffic here has dropped considerably in recent months. Have you wondered why? Who knows, but perhaps trolling is one factor - you know, the sort of stuff that deliberately winds people up and creates bad feelings. You hit the nail on the head - pathetic, petty little arguments are precisely the sort of stuff that we don't want!
