Actually you'll probably end up buying a 4.2m lengths.
Many years ago I used to work in a timber merchants and we used to buy the timber in by the metre, but the length were always (and still are as far as I know) in multiples of 0.3m. We'd then sell it by the ft.
I used to find it amusing that a chippy would come in and ask for 14ft of 4x2 and our response would be "Would a metric 14 do?". A metric 14 being 12 x 0.3 m = 4.2m or 13' 9" (3" short of 14'). he's response would be either "that'll be fine" or "better make it a 15".
And don't ask about sheet material sizes, in particular hardboard.
