.....Excellant programme last night on the box about lakes in Africa giving off tidal waves of freezing cold CO2
and wiping everybody out, virtually instantly.

Mick, you have such a funny way of putting things!

Has anyone been down Cuckoo Cleeves recently or is it still closed? Or am I missing the plot to close all Mendips caves by Xmas...

CSCC Access Guide doesnt say anything about it, but then i know if that was changed when it was closed.

I stand corrected, I just jumped straight to the access guide from the welcome screen so bypassing that that...

Yes, I probably should have updated the main entry but I had good reason to expected the cave to re-open before now.

I 've just found an old survey of Cuckoo Cleeves.1968
One of the chaps (who at the time was in A.C.G.) got himself wedged in "The Lake"
I think he was caving with Paul Hodgson (still in ACG)
There is no lake drawn on this survey?

Last time I spoke to the owner of the cave, he was suprised to hear it was still closed - after all at Hidden Earth we had been told it was open again...  :-\

I think you are thinking of back in about 1995. A good example of bad caving practice. The caver in question was so keen to get to the lake that he raced off ahead of the other 2 in the group and dived down the wrong rifty bit head first and got himself well and truly stuck! His watch, wellies and socks all came off and ended up the other side of him somehow. His watch was one of those that go beep every hour! Several months late, Mr Champion (master of all squeezes) wriggled down and retrieved the watch.
Paul Hodgson wasn't on that trip.

"Hi Bill,

copyright for all these  *surveys *would probably be readily granted for your Google Maps project.

Although that would mean a lot of tracing to do ..."

clicking on the word Surveys brings up the works of the esteemed MCRA
Go to survey of Cuckoo Cleeves
1968
same one I've got

no lake though.
Is there a latter survey?

Have any very slim cavers swam in the exclusive lake recently,
perhaps if anyone is up for it they could collect a water sample
and "we" might learn what's in it?

My guess is it will contain "water".  :sneaky:

On looking in Mendip Underground 1999
Cuckoo Cleeves
they claim the difficult route to Lake Chamber extension was finally forced by WCC in 1976

but underneath it claims the latest survey by WCC is 1968.
However in M.U. there is an ink drawing showing the lake,
so it must have been surveyed to some extent?

Does one have to do everything for this fool?
Graham,
you might have missed the latest directive, we are suppose to be trying
to ease up on the personal abuse.

I am sure The Wessex will have drawn up the Lake Chamber extension,
as the route is so extreme, possibly not as an accurate survey?
however I am not a member of The Wessex and am not currently in The M.C.G. Hut,
so at the moment I can't access our library.

Yeah, well, I picked up the reference from the MCRA website within 45 seconds (timed) of reading your post. I know you have been directed towards such sources of material  before, but you don't seem to retain information very well.

I shan't bother again.
