There was probably a lack of lunchtime chips and burgers...

Chips were around, but burgers and pizza were foreign exotics when I was a kid. There were no MacDonalds in the 50s.

Tried one of those - bit like Osprey or Swan to be honest, weedy muddy taste.... :)

One of my boys ( age 9 ) recently wrote a CV at school as part of a class exercise. Under "Hobbies" he put "caving".  :)

Now I need to work on his brother!

Quite simply kids today (in general) just aren't interested.  If it involves a play station they'll do it but for most anything that involves activity or voluntary exercise is a definate no.  Also many parents are so over-protective that the mere idea of letting their little darlings go caving would give them a heart attack.  Add to that the insurance and legislation problems for those who would be taking them (if it's involving any under 16's and an organised club/group activity there needs to be a criminal records bureau check of ALL adults involved).  Some parents won't even allow their kids on school trips now if other parents are going in case one of them has some dodgy secrets (the sort that would fail the CRB checks).

I went to the local shopping mall with said 9-year old son yesterday. As we walked past the pay machine for the car park, I noticed it was labelled "Pay Station 3". I asked if this was the thing he wanted for Christmas, as all his mates were talking about it. I think he got the joke. Then I pointed out that having one of these might be better than having what he really wanted, as strangers might keep coming up to it and put money in it for him. He thinks I'm mad. He's probably right.  :-[

As everyone else is going completely off thread (as usual)
I will chuck my ten peneth in.
I saw some of the results of a survey done recently about Primary school kids. All I can say is I was shocked. I am not going to quote but the number of these kids who could not eat properly with a knife and fork was amazing. ( They are just used to using  fingers Mc donalds etc. What chance does society have when the rudiments of life/manners are ignored at this early stage.  My stance is this Parents get a grip or beware the results.

They are just used to using  fingers Mc donalds etc.

Well, if they don't wash their hands before eating, they will all die of food poisoning. Problem solved. Mother Nature always works things out in the end.

"Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em, And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum..."

Ignorant people have children; by definition the children are sufficiently "well educated" when they are as ignorant/intelligent (delete as applicable) as the parent(s). The habits of the parent(s) are adopted as the habits of the child.

Is it any wonder, then, that there are large numbers of young people who don't possess basic etiquette? At a guess I'd say about 75% of the population would grunt "Etty-what?".

yes its probbly true that many of us do live more sedimentry lifes then most young people in the past however the "all young people want to do is play on the play station" notion does not cover all young people by far so please dont condem us all as a lost cause.
if you want to help young people get into caving then you could try thinking of ways to get round some of the folowing problems that make life dificult for young people trying to get into caving:
transport-i dont know about other areas but as far as i can see public transport is vertualy non existent on mendip so any one trying to get to caving meets is going to have dificulties getting there unless they have parents who are preperd to drive them or can get a lift with another caver

times of caving trips- it seems to me that most caving clubs midweek trips gather at about 7pm so theres not much chance of the trip ending before 10 at which point everyone promptly bugers of to the pub meaning that any person who did get a lift with a member of the club is then stranded untill last orders, 30-40 minutes for the journey home would see them geting back at about 11:30 at the earliest. it doesnt mater how keen you are to go geting permision from parents who may well be fairly sceptical of the sport anyway to let you go caving with a bunch of strangers and not get back untill 11:30 is i would suspect neigh on imposible for most people .

Sceptical parents-hapily enogh this problem doesnt afect me but i suspect that woried parents is a major facter in some peoples non participation especily if said parents only contact with caving is throgh the media.

the fact that its a hell of a lot easier to go to a climbing center than to try and find a caving club and organise transport and persuade sceptical parents to let you go whats more a climbing center doesnt have the same scerie "a huge boulder might fall on youre head " imige that caving seems to have aquired.

age gap- there are very few young people involved in caving at the moment given a choice between climbing with a bunch of people youre own age or caving with a bunch mainly comprised of 30+ year olds which do you think the majority of people are going to opt for?
