Doing titan soon any thoughts on my SRT kit

IMG_6207.jpeg
I’m doing titan for the first time soon and decided to finally put my own SRT kit together for it. I know titans big and my gears not perfect. Any suggestions would appreciated and Ik my breaking crabs rusty :))

IMHO... with the exception of the weird Petzl spelegyca cowstail thing made from sewn tape (which has ripable stitches to absorb energy), you should never ever ever, have cows tails made from a tape/sling.

If you have even the tiniest "fall" onto them, even 1 foot which is suddenly sitting down heavily unexpectedly not an actual fall. you could jar your back. A fall factor of anything significant is really bad news. But you can make your own cowstail much more safely from some dynamic rope, even old rope would be better than "good" tape.

Not sure about the 1 sling trying to be 2 cows tails, can't see that working well other than 2 clip in to the same thing, better off 2 separate ones. Again you need a bit of rope (dynamic) really

Edit: The weird petzl thing I mentioned

It looks as if your main harness krab, that your simple, cowstails and chest ascender are attached to, is an ordinary screwgate. They are only intended to be loaded along their length, not across their width. You should have a D shape one such as a Petzl Omni or a D maillon that's designed to take a cross load.

I can't quite see in the photo, but does the krab that attaches your simple have a screwgate?

+1 for dynamic cowstails, for less than a tenner you can save yourself a lifetime of back ache.

+1 for a proper D-Ring as well, you can’t beat the Petzl Omni IMO, as “expensive” as they are, they’re soooo worth the money

+1 to locking crab for descender

I'd put that HMS screwgate the other way round if you have to use it (rather than ChrisB suggestion) with the screwgate outwards, just if you climb a rope the chest ascender might keep catching at the gate and clanging every time you sit down which will at the least be irritating!

Same comments regarding the use of slings as cowstails would apply to the safety link from the central connector to the hand jammer. BEst to use dynamic rope for that job as well. Also, if that harness is 10+ years old I would bin it and buy a new replacement.

I don’t think this is true, it would be great if you could point me in the direction of any documentation that confirms this?

I think you’re confusing the idea of an energy absorbing lanyard and these things

Ive used a sling as cows tails as a fresher forgot theres so gave them mine. We werent doing anything massively technicaly or hard but i sepnt a good while swinging round and did take a small slip on them and they were fine. Apart from not doing the knots correctly so they were accedently adjustable id use them again if i needed to

Starless River describe it as follows "...Tape webbing cowstails, whose main advantage is a lower profile than knotted rope models. Short cowstail is 32cm, long cowstail is 58cm long. The Spelegyca is made with stitching that rips in the event of significant shock loading, so that it performs in a way similar to a dynamic rope.
Comes with the rubber ‘String’ device which protects the ends of the lanyards from abrasion and keeps karabiners aligned correctly.
Never to be used as a Via Ferrata lanyard!..."

Petzl doesn't mention this. Not sure if the description above is old and Petzl no longer state this as not meeting energy absorbing CE standards they can't. Or if the Starless River description is wrong? I assume it's old not wrong?
