Fenix Headtorch strap config

Just got a fenix hm60r and fitting it to my BD half dome, thinking of leaving the over the top strap off, any one any experience in doing so? Seems to be pretty steady with just the main round the sides strap in the strap clips

Personally I don't like using the straps to secure lights on helmets as the elasticity tends to go quite quickly with mud ingress, then they tend to wobble around. A couple of pairs of tiny holes melted into the helmet case to pass some zip-ties through would allow you to attach the plastic mount that holds the torch to your helmet?

Out of curiosity. Why melted instead of drilled? Or do you mean a slot shaped hole?

I have my fenix on a clip in mount (Fenix ALG-03 V2.0) that was about a fiver, it comes supplied with an adhesive pad for mounting, but if you dont trust that it'd be a very easy job to cable tie it to a helmet. Holds the lamp very nice and snug, reassuring "clunk" when you clip it in. Plus something about those reflective fenix straps annoys me, it gives me great pleasure to know I don't have one on my head lol

Perfect, 6.95 on amazon that'll do nicely, something about putting holes in me lid makes me uncomfortable

I've taken it for a few good swims without the glue giving up - seems to be fairly solidly attached (I do have a tiny bit of cord tied through it and my helmet though, as I'm still not 100% confident in the glue not dissolving when I'm face down in a big puddle)

Just messaged fenix to check it's compatible, would do The same with the cord too

if you're in the midlands I can bring my helmet next time I'm your way if you wanna do a test fit? looking on Fenix's website it doesnt look like they list your lamp specifically, despite the fact that it appears to be on the same "backing plate" as lamps that are listed as fitting

edit: turns out I was wrong - several websites selling the HM60R and the alg-03 state that they are compatible

Thanks for the offer, I'm up in the northwest so a bit out the way. For 7 quid I'll give it a go, can return it if it doesn't work!

I use one of the heavy duty rubber straps that used to come with Petzl Duo headlamps with my Fenix HL55.

I quite like that melting allows you to make a slot rather than a hole, which holds your zip tie nices and snug when you pass them through. I'd still tether the torch to your helmet with a bit of cord tbough, as those zip ties aren't infallible!

I have a gas iron with a flat tip that would do the job nicely.

Fenix have replied confirming their mount compatibility and are going to update their website

Second this, you can pull up the data sheet via 3M's website if anyone is desperate to verify this
So I got the mount and left it for the 3 days the packaging said after fitting. Had no issues on my first trip, even though it was very wet it's still solid. Thanks for the product tip!

For what it's worth, I have a pair of HM65r's. I have one mounted via the elastic strap. The other, I swap between two identical helmets fitted with the ALG-03 V2 mount - One I use for caving, the other I use for my landscaping.

I like the idea of using the rigid mount, and keeping the clips on the helmet free for a 2nd/backup light if possible. I'm still not 100% confident in the rigid mount, and the 2-sided tape. Though after some use I must say there has been no dissapointment yet. The mount does seem easier to dis-mount than mounting the head lamp, which is my primary concern.

I do like the idea of using zip-ties through everything, to secure. I wouldn't rely on zip-ties alone, as they're often brittle plastic, and bust quite easily when they're under tension. But they would serve as a fine backup to the 2-sided tape and rigid mount.

For those questioning the 2-sided tape, it's 3M's VHB (very high bond) tape that uses exceptionally strong adhesive. I've used this in factory-robot applications before. It is quite impressive.

I'm impressed with the adhesion. But I'm not taking my paracord safety tether off it 😂
