You could relive the final stages of Friday's Tour De Yorkshire, which finished in Settle.

A quick link here, however search ITV iplayer for the highlights.  The stunning scenery around Settle, which is the (easily accessible, just a few miles away) nearest town to The Dalesbridge Centre is shown in it's full glory.

If you are not familiar with the area where Eurospeleo 2016 is being held watch the highlights - you are in for a treat  :)

A bit further away is the coastal walk from Arnside to Silverdale which can be made circular. Take in Arnside Knott as well and stunning views of the Kent Estuary and the viaduct. Time it right and you can see the tidal  bore in the Kent Estuary as well. There is some caving to be done in the area as well!

Just over a week to go  :D

100m brand new, shiny rope up for grabs  :D

Not only that, if you enter this competition you are helping to provide information to cavers visiting The Dales, for Eurospeleo - can only be a good thing......

Cheers, Pegasus

My guess is that our visitors will, in the main, be from areas with bigger, better, mountain scenery than the dales have to offer, and few will know or care much about our history. But they will all have heard of "Manchester", and "football", so a trip out to Old Trafford ( http://www.manutd.com/en/Visit-Old-Trafford/Museum-And-Stadium-Tour/Stadium-Tour.aspx ) might well make their visit. Or there's Elland Road, though younger visitors probably won't have heard of "Leeds" and "football" - well not in the same sentence!

Not long to go - so keep entering  ;)

For people that like holes in the ground, can I suggest a brief and possibly in passing visit to Dry Rigg Quary, only about 3 miles from Dalesbridge. There are two little known public viewing platforms, with interpretative info - it is very impressive and slightly unexpected. Whatever your views on digging up the National Park.  :-\

Slightly further away but in a similar vein is "The Coldstones Cut" - Yorkshires biggest and highest public artwork. Located on Greenhow Hill off the Grassington - Pately Bridge road and at one of the largest Quaries in the area.

There is also a film by Sid Perou: http://caving-library.org.uk/collections/youtube.php?id=55

Most people visiting Eurospeleo will probably visit Settle at some stage.

If so I can not recommend highly enough the circular walk to the top of Catlebergh Rock. This is the crag and flagpole above Settle and the views are just great - owned by the Town Council access is free, although I think possibly locked at night.

There are sport climbing routes: http://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=1965

The whole area was a Victorian pleasure ground in bygone times and indeed at one time there a large sundial covering the whole hillside.

However ................................... for those that are into portals and trips into other worlds. There is always this .........  :doubt:

I would recommend that our visitors catch the train to Saltaire, a Victorian model village located in Shipley.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltaire
It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site so not that many in England or so close to Dalesbridge.

Also has the 1853 Gallery in Salts Mill (exhibition of Hockney's work) plus cafes and shops selling books, art supplies, jewellery, outdoor wear, antiques, suits, bicycles and housewares; the last includes pieces by internationally known designers such as Alvar Aalto and Philippe Starck.shops

A grand day out, but then I may be biased.

I can't be too fussed to look back through all the suggestions but you can hire mountain bikes from the shop in Settle.

The Pennine Cycleway, Way of the Roses and Settle to Clapham routes are close to the Dalesbridge centre and I'm sure cycle companies offer a delivery and collection of hire bikes service.

http://www.cycle-adventure.co.uk/yorkshire-dales (free delivery if there's a few)  perhaps it would be a good idea for someone from one of these companies to be asked to operate out of the near area during the event?

I have been asked to pick a winner  ;)

Well obviously my posts were the best, especially the portal into another world from Castleberg Rock, if you have not clicked the link do - its weird and a little sad. Second would have been Badlad with Inkleton. But I suppose neither of those count!

My winner is .......... ianball11 ............ for his variety of posts backed up by links, probably around 15 to 20 suggestions in there. My favorite is the cycling opportunities. My advice is to consider bringing a bike with you to Eurospeleo, from nipping to a local pub or cafe to the white knuckle excitement of the Gisburn Forrest trails. The on and off road cycling around Austwick is just great  :)

Runner up (although sorry no prize) would have to be ................mikem.................. for finding and posting the link to the history of Dalesbridge as the Harden Bridge Isolation Hospital!

Thank you SpanSet for the fabulous rope prize and everyone for entering - see you at Eurospeleo.

Cheers
