If someone digs a connection between two caves, does this then become one cave? Cavers seem very keen to join caves together, like UFS to Gough's for example. If so, isn't our ultimate aim to have only one cave on Mendip? So the lower the cave count, the better?

Yes. Seems that way. A strange and proud boast indeed - "We are the best caving region since we have one cave".
