Just seen this very sad news.
Ian was a great all rounder and alway's helpful to others. I first met him ages ago when he asked me to take him to Cliff Force. Getting changed on the fell I noticed he had a pair of nasty scrapes on his back and when he turned round there was matching pair on his chest. He had sawed through the re-bar "grill" blocking entry to Fairy Holes and was quietly exploring this when everybody thought it was "lost".
It was so tight - flat out between the sawn off ends of the bars - that the resulting "tram lines" front and back were hugely impressive - and anyone who knew Ian will know him as the archetypal "thin man". Fairy's and a lot of what Ian got up too took Guts, he was also a very impressive climber and I witnessed one of his big ascents when he led "Centrefold" (E6) on Raven Crag - while I was quietly having a major epic on "Fine Time" alongside it.
A great loss and as Adele will know - the second very untimely death of someone I greatly respected - in such a short time.
Its times like these where you are reminded to stuff your pockets with adventures and make every minute count.
My deepest condolences to Ian's friends and family.
