Not sure if this has had a mention before but ive just used - with success - this program free from the internet to recovery image files from an sd card that was requesting a format only.....
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm

I was able to recover 114 files that were on there that both the reader in the camera and the computer could not...

How do either of these work with recovering RAW images? I bought a commercial product when i accidentaly re-formatted my memory card on a trip to France (well, you know how cheap the 5 litre cans of red wine are on the continent...), worked fine with everything except the RAW images. Also learned an important lesson - if you hav screwed it all up, leave it alone! Taking any more pics just over-writes, and messes up whateve file format is left on the card. ;)

Have used a purchased recovery system called 'don't panic' with good results. About ?20 I think, but has proved well worthwhile on a number of occaisions. I believe that there is a simpler trial version free on-line, but couldn't be arsed with trying to find something on t'net every time things go pear-shaped.
Haven't tried it with RAW though as yet.

I've used this:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Which will restore something in the region of 200 file types (not just pictures and videos...), from several different file systems, and in several different operating systems.  I've successfuly used it on sd cards, hard disk video cameras and hard disks.  I just tested it with an sdhc card and it finds panasonic raw files no problem.  It's free (open source, the best kind of free).

if you use a "Proper Operating System" it's actually in a package called testdisk, install in a shell with:

su -c "apt-get install testdisk"

I'm giving this one a try in case it can recover some files that I deleted off the SD card but can't find on the PC either. Fingers crossed.....

menacer, I am officially indebted to you and publicly offer my heartfelt thanks for saving me from a horrible fate  :kiss2: - I retrieved almost 400 images from a formatted card last night, they were every picture we'd taken since last August, so that included Xmas, and basically nearly the whole 2nd year (son) and 4th year (daughter) of pics of the children.

I have now setup an Amazon S3 account and purchased a lifetime subscription to Jungledisk (20 USD), just in the process of setting it all up to do backups to an online 'cloud'....

Lesson learned  :spank: o_O

Yep - nice one menacer, just used it to recover a photo of the kids that my missus accidentally deleted from her phone.
She was most upset, and I am now her hero.
Cheers
