Have to admit I would love a go on that man engine- at least you’re not in a waterfall or being choked by gas !
 
The lift on BBC link isn't a man engine though. They were originally designed in Germany before being fitted here (also has details of the Levant disaster):

The German mine is a tourist attraction, but you can only look at the engine:

The paternoster lift was first built here, but more are found in Germany nowadays:

The other one is at the University of Essex Albert Sloman library. Leicester uni removed their's a few years ago:
