Leidarendi lava tube

Has anyone visited the Leidarendi lava tubes in Iceland?  I'm going to Iceland in January and just wondering if you can visit these without a guide? There are several tourist trips from Reykjavik but they charge about ?50 per person. I'll have a car and can take helmet and lamp with me so would prefer to do this myself.

Hey mcrtchly, just wondering if you were table to visit the Leidarendi tubes without a guide, and if so, if you had any difficulty finding them. I'll be heading to Iceland this summer for my honeymoon and I'm trying to find some stuff to do, but on a students budget...

I understand that Leidarendi is now gated, you might be able to gain access via the Hellaransoknafelags Islands (Icelandic speleological society) but I think the chances are slim.  There are however loads of lava tubes accessible in Iceland, and many of these within easy distance of Reykjavik.  In the immediate area of Leidarendi I would highly recommend Floki as a good trip (it requires a walk of a coupe of km from the road).  It has more passage and is a far more interesting cave.  If you send me a PM with your email address I'll send you some info.
