Dunno about bieng tight but,

Large (8mm?) stainless steel maillions £5.75 each in J Ratt's emporia. :ras:

I had 8 of them on last saturday night.

Last time I bought a carabina it cost £17.50 from V2 in Llamberis (mind you it IS a steel HMS, for useing to connect my STOP to my central maillion)

Blimey, £5.75 for a maillon....

I know I've not bought any new kit for about 30 years but last time I got krabs they were from Decathlon (own brand) and are very good. They were about £4-5 IIRC.

Anodised gate with a heavy knurled screwy thing....top kit.

Got them in France, dunno if the UK branches do them.

Clog 10's are only £6 in Hitch n Hike.... and they are a good krab. No contest with maillons!

Remember that these are stainless steel and are, therefore, much more expensive. I bought some 6mm stainless steel ones a while ago and they're fantastic - stronger than 7mm ones, much lighter and smaller and they don't rust. I'd recommend them every time.

I get my steel HMS krabs from Hitch n Hike - the only place I've ever found them. They're about £12 there, if I recall. Not sure I'd use one for my Stop though  :-\

Horses for courses (as always with these things).

Gonna leave your rope insitu on some up pitches for a while e.g. while your digging.- stainless mallions every time.

not gonna rust - not going to go snotty like ally krabs.  cheapest stainless option.

Sport clipping in the dales. cheap light ally krabs. Quick, light, easy to do and undo.

Something like the Berger, well - anything you can get your hands on.
Mallions do pack up smaller that krabs, and you do need a hell of a lot em. bit heavier - but hey, your wellies are full of water and your suit is cacked in clay. Just gets you fitter.

The only reason I use it on my STOP is that it fits the slots better* than the clog one (ally) that I was using.

*because its got a round profile as opposed to a wasted one.

agree that round profile is better for this - Oval shape is better for stops too, rather than D shaped.

Troll do a nice one.

They didn't do stainless ones when I were a lad.....

I'd be impressed if they were stronger though, stainless is usually relatively weak, like-for-like, than non-chromium steels.

In cross section my HMS is round, as opposed to an oval cross section of my ally clog.

this is what I use to connect my STOP to central maillion:

its a DMM one.

A gross over-generalisation, as even the briefest google on the material properties of common carbon and stainless steels will confirm.

For example:

1018 mild steel - tensile strength: 63,800 psi.
304 stainless - tensile strength: 73,200 psi.
8.8 grade medium carbon steel bolt - tensile strength: 120,000 psi
A2 stainless steel bolt - tensile strength: 100,000 - 125,000 psi.

In the case of formed components such as bolts (and mallions) the heat treatment applied during manufacturing has as much influence on the final strength as the material properties.

Nick.
