f*** that, he's banned, permanently. That sort of stuff isn't tolerated here in any form.

Is there anything to prevent him from just signing up again with a different username?

Not really, but it poses an inconvenience for that person as they can no longer use their username which has their posting history, and if anyone wants to send them PMs, etc.

It also bans any IPs that they have posted from so if they're using a fixed IP then it's a real pain in the arse. Also of coures bans their email address, etc.

People who have been banned will usually come back with some smart arse comments on their new ID so it's easy to spot them and re-ban them.

A LOT of people are on on dynamic IP so you'll just be banning a random bunch of innocent people who happen to use the same ISP. Spotting the old IP turning up under a new name could be useful but not banning it.

My thoughts too.

I can check all the IPs that a certain person has posted from. The person concerned had posted mainly from one IP over a long period of time which suggests a fixed IP, or a dynamic one that's not been released back into the pool.

The likelihood of anyone else who uses this site getting accidentally banned is extremely slim and if an innocent problem has an issue then they can get in touch and we can sort it out. How likely is it that Mr X who happens to share the same ISP as you is also a user of ukcaving.com and is also going to use that same exact IP? Not very :)

Dear Viv, and Toni come to that,
If you're looking for a caving club with a base on Mendip 50 yards from Longwood August (although we are not allowed to hold keys) who take there caving very sensibly and easily then let me know. I too have heard of this trick and it's evil. Sump 1 for the first time, or any time come to that as you say trying to get your breath is not a simple matter and I don't care how many people tell me sump 2 is a free divable doddle, they can take a jump. We take it easy and it's a much a social weekend as a caving weekend.

Oh, our place is basic, don't get me wrong but we have good safe cavers amongst us.

Let me know. Off to pit now.

If it "Too hot keep out of the kitchen". Probably not the best advice in this case, but caving is not for wimps. It is for hard men. "If you are not ‘ard, you shouldn’t have come". Perhaps in this case, Val would be better off in the kitchen, doing womanly things.

This section of post removed by the moderator it was offensive and uncalled for.
A warning has been sent to James.

If you can’t take a joke Val, then stay at home.

I'm really pissed off by these comments. You may make them in jest James but judging by your previous attempts at contributing to this forum I would doubt it. You are just a childish twat who should go to another forum and take your silly opinions with you.

I was so furious that I did not even bother to read the rest of the thread before ranting!
Well done Bubba. I'm surprised he stayed on here with his previous comments.

In which case you would have blown a gasket if you'd seen the post before it got moderated! What's left is nothing in comparison. Catching up on a few week's of posts then? Nice to meet you on Saturday, BTW.  :)

Likewise Mr B.
Been away in Morocco for nearly three weeks then to HE before going back to work  :(
Without wishing to deviate from the subject though.....

Don't let this put you off caving. It was a mean and very stupid trick and I think Martin probably ( I don't know him) feels quite embarrassed about it now. Most of the cavers I have met would have never done that, especially to someone who had never done sump 1.
Well done on a good trip report after so much Sambuca. My posts are all over the place after only a few glasses of anything!

I think the discussion here was useful and it doesn't seem to have put Viv off.*  As for the Sambuca: RESPECT!

*The trick, that is. The discussion might.

We are all coming round for a Sambucca session. Last one under the table has to get up and get our cows in in the morning!

This guy is a bit of a twit and has apologiesed, hopefully he will think twice before pulling that one again. i have met so many fantastic people though caving, try not to let this one experience prevent you from enjoying what caving has to offer. ;)
