Media reporting of OFD Rescue

Yeh the full page spread is really good. Lots of photos and yes the weather on the surface was horrible glad I got to avoid it being underground!

Glad to see the Mail is turning around somewhat.

I stuck up for the daily mail on the 3 traverse article, I shall stick up for them again, people will have to remember that not every paper is lucky enough to have a David Rose on their staff, so for a normal reporter to get facts wrong and to dramatize what they perceive is the danger shows to us that know how wrong they can be, should it not be then for us cavers to try and take a more active roll in what is reported so at least what David said they have got the basics right.
Daily mail in my opinion is no worse or better in general than any other paper. If we read all todays papers I am sure we could pick holes in all the stories with inaccuracies and slants towards what the reporter & the paper lean too.
so for what its worth in this instant, well done the Daily Mail

It's funny hearing people's perspective on this at work.
None cavers perceive it to be incredibly dangerous.
Yet I find that the most dangerous thing I do is ride a bike to work. I have had far less incidents caving than I have cycling due to other road users.

It's probably because most non-cavers only hear about caving when it is in the news when there has been a rescue on.

I have to say - you can argue about the Daily Mail?s position in the political spectrum and the people who comment on their articles - but, at the moment, they are the newspaper/news organisation that are covering caving in the most accurate, sympathetic and detailed manner.

I?d have thought, as a caving forum (rather than a political forum) we should be applauding and encouraging it.

I make absolutely no comments on their political position or political reporting (!) - just their caving coverage, which is excellent. They are definitely dragging in my ?clicks? when they publish good caving articles.

I have the Guardian and the Mail articles. If anyone has others please let me have the link so I can save them for the British Caving Library OFD Rescue archive.

Thanks
Mary

The travel editor has been in touch. I've been asked to do a feature on the SWCC hut at Penwyllt as a romantic destination for (broke) couples. I hope no one will have a problem with that.

To be fair I did meet my wife there

Me too  :)

Any time you see a general media article about any subject you know a lot about, you'll find it is full of factual errors and misunderstandings. Keep that in mind when you read any article on a subject you don't know much about. Is it likely that they are only making mistakes when you are in a position to spot the errors?  :)

Seems to be the accepted wisdom aye, but is that not just because there aren't that many incredibly niche journalists? Dave's articles, as a caver writing about caving, are accurate, but get someone who normally does political or local journalism to do it and it won't be for obvious reasons. Makes me assume war correspondents and politics reporters are usually factual because they are in their sphere of expertise (personal or publication biases notwithstanding).

Also depends what sort of deadline they are working to - something like a cave rescue is only usually newsworthy for a very short time (Thailand excepted)

The BBC still had a related article on their homepage yesterday which is ages after the actual event.

All good PR.

Chris.
