I can see things getting out of hand here with all the interest so I've stepped in as crowd control...

Please form an orderly queue... :hidesofa:

Done the through trip twice and been in a third time looking for an overdue party. The second time was because I reasoned it couldn't really have been that bad the first time. I was wrong. The state of the route is far from good and it is only a matter of time before somebody gets seriously hurt either as a result of a roof fall (the callout I went on ) or a bridge collapses. Make no mistake if one of those bridges fails when you are on it, you're history.

Sorry to be so down about the place but that's just my view. I suspect that people who rave about the place do so purely because of the adrenaline buzz you get from surviving rather than from a true appreciation of the dangers of the place.

If you do good, take care and have a damn good time.

PS please let us know when you're going so I can be out of the country :)

The other guy was Pete Stockton, author of the first report 'Chamber of Horrors' on the Parys Underground links to other articles...

The first Parys account sounds awful. Fancy missing last orders

Ah, that's it - I'd forgotten his name.

To be honest, it wasn't quite as terrifying as I'd expected becuase somebody had installed some wire zip-lines which we could put a pully on to haul kit (and ourselves) over the pools.

That said, I agree that if one of the bridges suffered a big collapse, then you could easily be dragged under water still attached to the bridge. Need I say more....it would be less than pleasant....and also single 8mm bolts in slate roofs aren't all that confidence inspiring anyway.

The worst thing was the cold - a fair old wind whistles through those mines.

I wouldn't encourage anybody who isn't pretty competent to have a go at it because you could come a major cropper if you went off route or something collapsed, but it's a fascinating trip and has a real "Mines of Moria" feel to it.

Anyone else been down Rhiwbach Mine at Cwm Penmachno? I had quite a good trip through there a few years back. You go in through a quarry at the top of the hill and come out via a long adit. There are some VERY deep flooded sections at the bottom. Not as dangerous as Croesor by a long shot but good fun.

Yes.

Official access to visit underground was granted by the landowner about 18 months or so ago. As a result the various outdoor centres that operate in the area clubbed together and had a gate installed in the RSJ girders that previously closed off the obvious way in.

There are the remains of a couple of trucks in there and the very last remains of a winch.

Quite a good little trip.

It's a shame the links are broken to the pictures on the second site. Honistor Slate Quarries in Cumbria had this great gravity driven tram that used to go up and down the incline that runs through the center of the mine... when I look back I am amazed no one got killed screwing around on it!!

I agree with Bubba on the "Mines of Moria" remark about those trip reports!!

I've done it four times, each one was the last.

Last I heard the short dig after the 2nd pitch has been obliterated by new fall, so you have to boat / swim that chamber to reach a bypass level and then boat back again.

I couldn't recommend the trip on account of the previously raised problems, in particular if a bridge goes with you tied on to it, bye bye!!!

thats how we did it.

I'd recommend it. Its a brilliant trip. Just be aware that its possibly bloody dangerous and be prepared for any eventuality.

The bridges arent so bad now there are tyrolean wires installed.

Much respect to the early pioneers of the place.
