Moorfurlong - ladder is kaput

By kaput, do you mean it is no longer hanging of one bolt or bit of wire like it was in May, I reported it then.

14m ladder, 17m lifeline or 17m rope for srt according to the black book

Don't forget about 6m for the second little pitch.

It's completely had it.
I was in there on Saturday and the bolts at the top are not attached, a join between two sections has broken on one side and the bottom is badly buckled.

The rest of the pitches are easily freeclimbed but I suppose a lifeline maight be useful if you are not confident.

Mark, Ivan and I went to look at the ladder last week. While pulling it out and replacing it with some sort of belay for a ladder or rope would be the simplest solution, the landowner apparently wants the ladder kept in place so it will need to be repaired. So long as it doesn't get any more knackered that it already is, this should not be too big a job and we'll try to organise it later in 2009 when the weather is better and there is more daylight.

In the meanwhile, it's not safe to climb, so please make alternative arrangements if you want to go down the pitch and into the mine.

Nick.

Sorry if ive missed it somewhere else on the forum but is a bit of scaffold still required to enter moorfurlong?

Enjoyed reading about Mr Bentham btw although i never knew him!

It's a new ladder now. I think Nick ultimately did replace it, as all the trips I've done have been on a new ladder, and it's a long time since this thread was started. Second pitch is still free-climbable ;)

IIRC, it's the same ladder as was in before, I just made some new brackets to hold it in place and Mark, Ivan and I fettled the worst bits of it.

Brilliant, thanks Nick and Pwhole. Hope to have a look tomorrow, but Rowter first, so moorfurlong might be another day soon 😄

Well it was in good condition - it didn't look that old. Anyway, Moorfurlong is superb - a very easy trip (unless tight crawls don't appeal), but extremely interesting, both for the mine workings and the natural, which are, as is often the case round there, rather intermingled. The down-dip flatworks are brilliant.

Anyone have a grid ref for Moorfurlong? I can't get the location map inset on the survey and the OS map to line up!

Cheers

Thanks folks, had a good little trip in there yesterday, no need to use ropes. The new brackets had NJW 2001 stamped on them so guess thats Nick?

Agree with Pwhole about the tight crawls but not so sure about the 'superb'ness of it? Being still a bit ignorant of the finer points of lead mining (actually most points of lead mining), i guess i just slithered over the interesting bits without recognising them!

The '2001' is because the brackets for the Moorfurlong ladder were recycled from ones I made for the Surprise View ladder (in 2001) which were taken out when we replaced the old iron 'signal' ladder there with current box section ladder.
