Nellie Kirkhams Field Notes

I'm resurrecting this thread to see if anyone wants to pitch in with the indexing work while we're all in confinement.

To date, indexing of boxes 6,7,8 and 9 is complete, while boxes 1 and 2 have been partly done - I'll finish off box 2, do you want to finish off box 1 Rob?

If the dropbox links on this thread no longer work then the files are available from https://pdmhs.co.uk/nellie-kirkham-field-notes/

Great idea to resurrect AR  If people are looking for useful things to do this is a great cause. (y)

I fortunately WFH normally, so it's all hands to the desk for me, making hay whilst the sun is still shinning.

I'm relatively becalmed, so I don't mind having a go, though I can't really remember much about it. If box one is partially indexed, is that available? I already have the box file downloaded from years ago.

That's Rob's call, he started on it so I guess he gets first dibs on finishing it. I'm about halfway through box 2 now, but that's the biggest one of all at over 500 pages!

Hahah - then he's welcome to it! So does that mean that 3, 4 and 5 currently have no index?

I'm (hopefully) not going to get any spare time on this for the next few months, so please someone dive in and get it finished.

Well I'll start 3 for now, as it's already here, very interesting and luckily I have Doug and John's Glebe Cottage database too, which has a huge amount of Box 3 already transcribed, which will help hugely as they've logged the page numbers against the texts. I just have to try not to read it all! Strangely though, the box PDF doesn't seem to cover the first half of the DB transcription, which is mostly mixed Barmaster's logs of various veins around Castleton. The scans start at page 79, but the DB transcriptions got back to page 36?

I don't know if the database contents can be exported into any other DB format (it runs in Bekon Idealist) - it's not my strong point. But they both always said 'don't hoard it'. But I'm sure other copies of this exist already?

A good person to ask about DB conversion is Rob Hindle, the PDMHS webmaster - he took several of Dave Williams' old databases which are in archaic formats and converted them into something that could be hooked up to a website via SQL. I think there may well have been a copy of John's DB among Dave's files; I'll have a look and if so, I'll see what Rob says about shifting into something more modern. I could do with brushing up my rather rusty SQL skills anyway....

Here's the export dialog from Idealist - all the top dropdown options are saved as .txt files, obviously. The lower option is only available if I select 'Formatted' from the top list, and it saves as .exp files, whatever they are?

I do have a copy so I'll see what Rob suggests, it also looks like Dave may have got it to spit its contents out as a very large spreadsheet so I'll take a look at that.

I'm now 2/3 of the way through box 2, which is over 500 pages - most are less than half that (apart from no. 22 which has a lot of stuff on Alport), so anyone else feel like indexing a box or two? The more people chip in, the quicker we can put together a master index.
