WTF?

So if you are really bad do you come back as SysAdmin?
And if you're really good do you come back as CnC?
And just what did Peter do in a past life?

And there was 'lil 'ol me thinking that karma was like a wheel as in:

"what goes around, comes around."

Tripictacata, I wanna come back as a freshwater shrimp at the top of the '20 hahahahaha (now YOU look and don't tread on me)

How odd. Everyone, me included, went mad yesterday, smiting and applauding like it was some new game... just two karma points so far today!

yes here

the link is at the bottom of the main page.

I think its cause you said you wanted to smite yourself... lots, and since you cant - people have obliged on your behalf. Kind people

Me! Me! Me!

Poor old Cave Troll - you don't need to worry, m8, it's like Sam said.

Tip: watch what you say round here, people are liable to take you at your word.

BTW, Anne - if you snitch on me, I'll smite yer, cream bun or no cream bun :)

The 'reason for karma' field is too short. Doesn't give a chance to give a good explanation or post links to references.
Can this field be lengthened to say 256 characters - that's about three lines.
Other than that I like this feature - just need some karma.

Hmmm - if this is really in demand then i can probably change it but part of the reason it's short is that it forces you to give a pithy comment from the heart :)

eg

"coz X helped me get out of that awful squeeze without losing bodyparts"

vs

"on the 9th July, X really helped me when i became entrapped in death-squeeze by my engorged piles. A full trip report is here [link] and i would also like to say....."

I prefer the short, succint version :)

That happens a lot. People post meaning one thing and others read it to mean something quite different.

Reckon now the silliness is dying down, our long-suffering Bubba could usefully reset all karma back to zero and let everyone start again. How about it, Bubba, or are you still recovering from the OS re-install?

No no no, I have got 3 and I don't want to lose them, I might not get them back!
5 actually! Give me one of your immense collection of cream buns (before they get stale) and I'll make sure you do!

Yes that's exactly what I meant - naturally I prefer the longer version as it gives the user the chance to go for either option; long or short. Conversely having it short means that the long option is not possible.

Another useful potential feature, and probably not too hard to script for*, would be a cummulative forum karma - the sum of all its members. All the time this is positive it reflects that the forum is full of useful people making sensible or helpful or just plain amusing comments. The reverse is also true.

Thus it could be used as a litmus-test of the cummulative forum attitude - are we all good people or a bunch of twats. :)

* I'd offer to code it myself but my core skill is in Perl not PHP.

Does the forum keep its data in a proper DB or does it have lots of flat-files?

I don't know where else to put it but I want to say a big thank you to all those who gave me a point. I am a sad old lady and it really made my day to get a few + karmas!  :kiss2:

Over the long term, the first few days of silliness won't really matter :)

I've added the extended karma stats to the bottom of the log - though it doesn't quite do what you're saying it'd probably be quite easy to modify it to do so.

Not really because some nasty people might give good karma to other nasty people for being nasty :)

All database driven apart from one small config file.
