The fairies will then proceed to someones house in Matlock and give the owner a good kicking :chair: for mentioning the "g" word on a forum. "We are doing this for you own good" they will say, " you must learn to keep your trap shut and just get on with things"

Andy - do you think PDHMS might be interested now - and indeed - add it to their list of work.

DP - you'll need a derbyshire key,  :read:

ARRRRRGGGHHHHH!

What will really happen is that the gating faires will visit the place via B&Q one quiet day with a couple of bits of metal that amazingly fit, and neaten the collapse up so people can go and shine a torch to the end and say..."ohhh... thats interesting then"

If the fairies need a hand, or some gear, or just a cup of tea, the fairy grapevine will doubtless know of a place just up the road which can help. Sam has my number...

Nick.

Er..Hmmm.....Following further research by Sam it appears that it isn't a sough at all, but rather a chimney flue from an old lead works!!

And there I was hoping that an old Roman adit had been found leading to huge natural caverns, vast beyond the imagination of man, and possibly leading downwards to that vast underground sunless sea beloved of poets and novelists, where cave bears and mastodons still roam and incredible adventures are still to be had...

On a more serious note, if it is an old flue, the environment could be pretty toxic - doesn't this open up the possibility of a cartload of health and safety regulations that could cause the authorities to come along and seal it off pdq if it comes to their attention?  :cautious:

The old lead flues at Priddy Mineries on Mendip are open and free to explore. No danger notices nor nuffink.

Are you sure?

I know that the ones at Charterhouse-on-Mendip are fenced off with barbed wire and have been for years.

Such a place where a couple other willing fairies are bound to be found and would thoroughly enjoy a little dance to the beautiful music of hammers and angle grinders (every weekday for the next month).

I poked about in some of the Mineries ones just under 2 years ago.

Yes this is true. In some areas the flues were used to precipitate arsenic. They sent young children up the flues to gather the stuff in bags. (Good use for children in my book ;)). This one isn't dusty, and water leaching through has made it look very clean, but poking in the floor is probably not clever.

I have been in the flues at the old St Cuthberts leadworks just under 2 years ago as well. Maybe my exposure to high levels of lead explains a few things :D

Quite clearly, this site must be gated to stop people dumping old bottles in it, and then having someone else nicking them as souvenirs. ;)
