Notts 2 / Committee Pot Squeaky Ladder Tat

Hi

Its not a "job stopper" but the tat holding up the ladder that squeaks so bad it hurts my ears, is probably in need of replacement in near future. The sheath has gone near the ladder.

I'll take some tat next time I am up that way, but iof you are heading down and can take some it might be nice to replace it.

I assume that ladder was put there for a reason, but whenever I climb it, as well as cursing the noise, I wonder if it actually helps with what would only be a small climb without it.

Or if there is going to be a ladder there, put another one joined to it so that it reaches the floor! :)

Which squeeky ladder are we talking about?

There's one after the tighter bit that's tied to a chockstone with some thin cord. It stops about 6ft off the floor.

This immediately leads to another ladder that's loose at the top and concreted-in at the base. It has a bit of 11mm rope tied to the top of it. This one seems to squeek at lot.

Both ladders make the climbs much easier than they would be otherwise.

The one that stops short of the bottom. I will simply replace the cord if no one else has next time I go down, above my pay grade to be modifying ladder arrangements in caves that others have worked on.

I've never tried the climb without this ladder (too much trouble to move it, even if I dared) but it looks like it would be a simple step up into a rising rift, so hardly a climb at all. Now it may be that the rift would be more awkward than it apears, but I can't help wondering how much it is actually helping (apart from letting the person in front know how far you've got from the bloody awful squeak!).

The last ladder was an awkward climb that you could pull a muscle on, not best after a long digging trip also a long way to fall if you went down the next bit It is .cemented in at the bottom to stabilise it a a bit .
The other one makes the climb a lot easier a new cord on both would do well poss bolting in or padding /quick set cement may help personal I quite like the noise you know the other k----ered person is on there way and when you get to my vintage you cannot hear as well .
Incidentally the almost last climb with a knotted rope is a lot better done back on itself as a short easy traverse + climb .
Please feel free to replace cord etc .In time the last ladder may need replacing +concrete at base as it is fairly light weight
Also the scaffold in the main shaft is painted with the Forth Bridge epoxy type paint and a lot of sacrificial metal anodes to reduce rust i/c one off an North sea rig !!!

I never get bored of the entrance shaft, and often descend having a chuckle to myself at the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing. Such an impressive feat of engineering.
