Next CNCC Committee meeting Saturday 26th October, 9:30am, Clapham Village Hall
The agenda for this next meeting is now on our website:
More documents including Officer reports will be uploaded during the week before the meeting.
Although this is a Committee meeting, we welcome anyone to come along and either spectate or participate. You are welcome to provide input on the discussions, and we always aspire to bring together the broadest range of viewpoints and ideas. We also have an Independent Caver (IC) Representative, Tim Allen, whose job it is to provide a democratic voice for all individual cavers (contact details on our website).
Tea/Coffee facilities are available at the venue (and sometimes biscuits), but please arrive 10 minutes early if you wish to use these so that the meeting can start promptly at 9:30am and we can hopefully be done in time for some caving afterwards
The agenda includes some interesting discussions:
Online booking system:
This was set up as a compromise/replacement to the old permit system of Leck, Casterton and Ingleborough, to respect the wishes of the landowners while providing cavers with freedom of access without hassle. Several years have now passed. Do we feel this system is still needed to preserve good landowner relations? Is it still right that CNCC should be encouraging cavers to use it? Would the caving community rather see the system phased out if no longer needed?
There are no proposals here, just a useful discussion... consider it a ‘periodic review’ on one of our processes.
Anchoring:
Discussion/approval of anchoring of High Hull Pot.
Constitution:
It is ten years now since the CNCC constitution was substantially reviewed (although in that time, several changes have been made for situation-specific needs). This year, a team are working to review the entire constitution to ensure it is fit for purpose and identify areas where improvements can be made. We urge all attendees to come with any suggestions, no matter how bold or outlandish, as well as ideas for future directions CNCC should be considering.
Officer vacancies:
In 2025, our Chair, Access Officer and Treasurer are all standing down. This meeting is an opportunity for interested people to make themselves known, ask questions, or just to spectate to see what the role might involve before putting your name forward.
Simpson/Swinsto chains:
This is a late agenda item, including a suggestion from one of our anchor installers, who has been re-anchoring Simpson Pot, to include chains on Slit Pot, Slit Pot overhead route and Swinsto Great Aven pitches. This could represent a better solution for pulling through on these longer pitches. Because this is a deviation from anything CNCC has supported before, we require Committee discussion and approval, which will be based on feedback and input from northern cavers.
There is already a lengthy discussion about this evolving here on UKCaving including some supporting arguments from the proposer:
It is important that any action we take here is supported by a good majority of the caving community, and that it has been carefully considered and weighed up against the alternatives (which are currently being discussed amongst the installers team).

Simpson Chains
Hello, I find the proposal to put chains in Simpson Pot distasteful. Please could I ask where they would be placed, what they are replacing etc? Perhaps having no interest in mines sets me apart, but I prefer the natural environment of caves to be maintained as much as possible and a chain I...
