P8

Can anybody give me some idea as to how wet it has to be before it becomes more than a fun trip?!!! I have been down a few times but not when there has been a forecast with rain in it. Cheers

To be honest, up 'til it gets stupid, the wetter it is the more fun it can be. It's possible to rig dry all the way to the bottom (you can rig Idiot's leap as a pitch or traverse over it with care). I would say if the entrance is so wet you can't get in (or more likely out) then it's too wet. You'd be suprised the conditions you can actually get in though. It's impressive. Don't forget the dry entrance is an option if you're uber-thin as well.

Dan.

Disclaimer - P8 is a quite serious and sporting trip under wet conditions, do not underestimate it or go down whilst it's wet and rain is falling or more is forecast. Use common sense and have fun.

i would endorse Dan's comments, unless you are likely to be drowned at the entrance, in P8 it just adds to the adventure!

Quality bit about the disclaimer!!!! I really respect you both have opinions. I'm happy to cave whatever the weather but don't won't to be responsible for an un necessary rescue. Cheers

The entrance can become impassible in flood conditions. I actually went late one evening about three weeks ago when it was snowing.
I have done P8 many times, various routes. I actually looked at the entrance and made the decision not to bother, there was more water going down than I'd ever seen, yes at the stage it was at the pitch was still passable, however had there been much more water, say from snow melt, things would have been very difficult.
P8 shouldn't kill you in a flood, if you know where to go, however the first pitch, true second pitch can all become impassable in flood.
The first pitch can be rigged as a travers round the left wall as you look at it, or you can climb up just before the pitch and rig it, avoiding most of the water.
If it's wet consider avoiding the true second pitch, climb up and there's the alternative second pitch, involves a travers over a couple of deep holes, recommend putting a travers line on.
There used to be a fixed ladder on the alternative second, this was removed about 10 years ago, however it's bolted.
I'd say check what the weathers Been doing for a few days before, if it feels wrong leave it for another day.
If you check the peak rigging guide it shows all the dry alternatives in Jackpot.
Enjoy, might be down there on Wednesday if it's safe.

Was up there yesterday and he'll there was some water around!!! Was thinking of p8 but didn't even bother looking, went down maskhill in the morning with the plan to do the wet later. Went down giants and it was at least knee deep all the way down. Considering I've been down there nearly 50 times, I was shocked at how much was in there and just shows the power and effect if flooding. Im familiar with everything that you mention regarding rigging so happy with that. Would imagine there still far amount of water going down it even today!!!! Cheers

Maybe you were part of the pair some of our group met at the Oxlow layby. We were doing an Oxlow - Maskhill exchange trip. A bit windy as wll as wet on the surface, wasn't it? I was nice to get underground! :)

Excellent, as usual. But not so good when returning to the surface!

Returning from carol singing in Hathersage yesterday I thought about this thread and whether anyone was down P8. The roads were like streamways never mind the vadose canyons. I hope it does some good clearing-out work in Gautries. Sandbags in Castleton tonight.

There was steam coming from the chicken rotisserie.

I parked round the back next to the stream and that was roaring.

Water levels in the Castleton area are currently "high". Both Peak and Speedwell Caverns are closed to the public.

Found a window to go down p8 today and it was pretty wet down there, but a quality sporting trip!!! Even got the misses to come with me and she loved it!!! Even though she didnt like the idea of 'hanging on my harness' she pulled it off with top marks!!!

Yep - though by the time you've dragged twice the length of rope for your lifelines - you may as well just taken shorter ropes and srt'd it.  (if you use life lines of course,  which of course, you do, right  ;)  )

p8, is it possible to do with a couple of ladders rather than srt?

It's possible to do any cave with ladders rather  than SRT ? if you can be arsed . . . . but what's the point?  ;)
