PDCMG meeting: Draenen access

No comment on entrances - strong arguments both ways and not down there often enough to comment - but I am certain it isn't worth falling out over. Have a heated discussion but for goodness sake get together for a beer and a laugh afterwards!

Conservation - I first went into Draenen within about 2 years of it being opened. I was immediately impressed by the amount of care that had been taken to preserve the "boring stuff"(mud banks....). But it wasn't boring - because someone had bothered to tape it shortly after finding it. The tape was a (mild) eyesore, but in later visits I have not seen substantial deterioration in the mud banks near the entrances. So yes, I can see that the original explorers did a great job there and gave it a high priority.

And AndyS, cavers do still trash caves. Maybe more slowly than our forebears, but we do. I have heard the tinkle of broken calcite more than once; I have seen mud spots on some of the most remote formations around. A recent example? White River. It is still gorgeous - but there is a noticeable amount of mud on the rivers that wasn't there a few years ago. Increased traffic thanks to through trips from Titan seems to have (somewhat) increased the rate of decay. Novii don't go there very often.....

mudmonkey's example of White River is a good parallel to the Draenen situation: the opening of a further entrance to a cave, for perfectly defensible reasons, has had a deleterious effect on the conservation of a different part of the cave owing simply to increased through traffic.

Mind you, a new entrance on Gilwern Hill would be even closer...

Pete,

Any idea where it is yet?

There aren't too many options so you can read that as a no because I haven't had time to get underground up there in the last couple of weeks.  However, I know where I would try to get in if I were so inclined and I have found bang wire in the Hole(s) a few years ago...

One thing I have wondered over the years is where does the top end of Llanelly Quarry Pot lie?  It is obviously very close to the surface but when one considers that this will be due to the cutting down of the valley during the last glaciation then the cave should continue upstream in the direction of Draenen (as does the small resurgence in the bottom of the quarry between Gilwern and Llanelly hills).  This would be a dig that would be worthy of consideration because a lot of new cave belonging to another very separate cave would have to discovered before a connection were made with Draenen and this would make a truly classic through trip.

So there's a challenge for you.  Happy digging

Cheers for the info, Pete. I think I may know the holes you are talking about (old Cwmbran digs?), although I haven't checked them recently either.

Interesting theory about Llanelly Quarry Pot. Hopefully, someone else will take you up on it as I'm not going to have the time myself. Thanks anyway.
