• Descent 302 is published on 15 February and it will soon be on its way to our subscribers.

In the newsdesk, read a review of the underground events at Kendal Mountain Festival, plus tales of cannibalism and the Cavefish Asteroid.

In regional news, we have three new connections in Ogof Agen Allwedd, a report on the iron mines of Anjou, an extension to Big Sink Cave in the Forest of Dean, a new dig in Yorkshire's Marble Steps Pot, student parties, an obituary for Tony Boycott, a tight find in the Peak District and a discovery in County Kerry with extensive formations.

Photography Showcase 3 per week limit

My third for this week. Not posed but taken during work in progress. Scurion and Torch lighting TG 6 on Programme. Work on the bottom platform 8 metres above base and 10 metres below the top platform. Drilling for 12mm pins to fit the platform support pole. Base jack one end screws onto a short pin.

Morning TOR, might I ask what – in this context – is 'Torch'? I'm interested in buying a (cheap?) but powerful torch for taking snaps underground.

Hi Fulk. I use Skyray Torches. Relatively cheap from China. Very high output but that only lasts a few minutes so you need two. They are not waterproof. One at around £50 is described as waterproof . I have one thats been down a metre and was OK. As cameras get more intuitive and editing suites more adaptive there may be a trend away from flashguns in normal set ups relying just on ambient light. I have not used my Yongnuo slave guns for a while now. The torches certainly work well for video from which you can get decent jpeg stills. The Chinese Skyray types look to be about £25 but you also need four batteries and a charger.

Just for comparison purposes this is a still image from a video taken at the same time with the same lightining. Whilst not technically great it took no time to set up and take and would be suitable for a small journal image or record shot. Back to the old adage of every picture is worth a thousand words. If the image does not relate a story what value does pure technical ability have ?

3 from a trip down the fabulous F'ing Hopeless at the weekend. Huge thanks to the diggers for opening it up and the CNCC for bolting it to allow us to enjoy tourist trips. Really hope people continue to respect the fantastic formations.

Just a trio images for now.
One shows a ledge part way down a mossy stope, giving a pleasant soft green backdrop.
The next is a partially flooded mine level deep in the workings, the water wasn't actually that cold

Finally there is a patch of recently exposed mud with mycelia searching for food
