Question for the pinheads - advice on small helmets that fit.

It's nearly time to bin off my trusty protex (the type with the high crown), that I've had since I started caving

I bought an ecrin roc a while back and it's totally rubbish for my tiny head because when I crank it down to make it fit I get choked by the chin strap and crushed in the temples by the headband and it still slips around when it's weighted with a light.

I'm interested to hear what helmets work from the small-skulled people out there.

Thank you.

Although not being the owner of a small head I recently replaced my CS Protex.  In the end and after much looking around I opted for an Edelrid Ultralight:  The shell is exactly the same (with the addition of a few holes) as the Protex and the cradle is pretty much identical.  If you liked the Protex the Ultralight is the lid for you.

Bung the ecrin roc on fleabay - they're going for silly money.

othe half has the same problem, her hats are mainly all kids ones!!!

Petzl elios size 1 works for her, bit tricky to fix a duo to but doable and secure.

CAMP Armour helmets go tiny (smaller than a size 1 Elios) and look cool. Not tried one caving but I climb with one.

Totally depends on the shape of your head.  I have an Elios size 1 for my tiny peanut.  Works a treat, doesn't slip around, can be adjusted adequately to accommodate a "do" rag underneath to absorb sweat and keep my hair from turning into dreads.  Good luck

Also having a small sweed, I had the same problem with that helmet.
The ecrin roc usually comes with two different thicknesses of foam pad, a thinner one pre fitted and a thicker one in a plastic bag that comes with it. Fit the thicker one  ;)

I have similar problems - I used to have an Ecrin Roc but no matter how I played with the adjustments and different thickness foam pads I could never get it to fit comfortably.

I then got a Camp Armour which fitted nicely. However, it fell apart rather quickly! It got a crack in it somehow or other, and then shortly after the foam inside (whatever you call it) came away from the shell so it's utterly unusable. Really should have sent the pictures off to Camp to complain but never got round to it.

I now use an Elios size 1, which still fits with a balaclava. It's infinitely more comfortable than the Ecrin, although the forehead coverage isn't that great (noticed recently when looking at a picture - I never thought to look in a mirror when trying it on!) so perhaps something like the Edelrid would be better.

It's all down to personal head shape/size though - try lots on and see which fits best! Good luck.

My little bit about having a small head;

I currently use an Elios size 1, it is the new style as my old Spelios ended up getting past it with stress lines showing. It is comfortable and easily adjustable for adding a balaclava or Alice band or whatever you happen to wear.

I did used to have an Edlerid Ultralight, which I adopted as my caving lid at the first center I worked in. It was nice and light, and comfortable but i ended up changing when I bought a Spelios.

I have used Ecrin Rocs and as others have said, never really got a good fit. Also feels like a mushroom on my head.

As for the Camp Armour, I wouldn't bother. I haven't had great experiences with them. A center I work for in the UK used them for climbing and another set for caving, Neither set lasted long. A variety of issues from cracks to disconnected straps, foam coming out and the adjusters being useless.

I looked about over the summer for a  new lid, tried on a few things and ended up getting an Elios again, then bolting my Duo onto it from the previous Spelios.
Why change something you know works for you? Especially when its so hard to get good fitting lid, when you have a tiny head.

Same trouble here. Elderid ultralight junior. =) Only one that fits n stays n doesn't wobble! Bonus is it's pretty cheap. Amazon.com you can get certain colors when on sale for like $30 (which is only about 20 GBP) I don't know if they run the same sales on .co.uk though.
