I think Hammy must mean the G5 housing is ?72, .

I thought you couldn't get a hard waterproof housing for the G3 or G5 (for sensible money that is, not an iklelite)? Anyhow G7's should be dropping in price now...

The G7s I looked at are more than the G9 at present - Amazon have the G9 for 267 quid... had to be sensible in the end though

Just got myself a mint used G7 from Mifsuds, largeley on the basis of Parkers having a G7 waterproof housing for ?80! Can't wait to get my hands on it. :D

You won't be disappointed, although with the waterproof housing it is a big lump. But having full manual control underground is spot on.

Canon G10 in the shops end of October apparently. Looks similar spec to G9 BUT with 28mm (equivalent) lens, which I feel is the only failing of the G9 (35mm equiv). Camera is different shape, so G9 housing won't fit. It is also more expensive at ?400 ish. Might push G9 and G9 housing prices down though, which might be good news for some?

There's more failings than that, such as the max 15s shutter and the small noisey sensor, but yes i agree 28mm will be most welcome.

Or might push the prices up as they will stop making them but people will keep wanting them.

True about the small noisy sensor, but I have an SLR and 10-20mm lens for real quality; the G9 is to take on more 'normal' trips (ie not 'photo trips', as it fits with 2 Vivitar 285s etc in a small Peli case, whereas the SLR etc needs 2 cases or one BIG case. Not only do you 'pay your money and take your choice', but it's also down to what you are prepared to carry. I do like the G9, despite the limitations, but of course have got some photos with it and thought later 'I wish I'd taken the SLR...'
Still, a nice decision to have to make, and better any photo than none at all?
Also I've made some underwater flash housings, and a fairly low investment in the Canon housing could have me taking sump photos (or at least attempting to!). Just need to find a way of triggering the flashes (Fireflies, being infra red don't work underwater).
Any suggestions?

Is there a hotshoe on the outside of the casing? If yes then a sync cable would be the obvious choice.

Very true, and it can't be that bad for quality if half the HE photo prizes were won with one!  ;)
I wander when was the last time the premiere trophy was won with a compact?

Hmm, difficult one. Original thought was radio slave triggers such as...

However it won't fit in the G9 housing.  o_O

Have you tried the firefly underwater? One poss would be to remove the IR lens on the front of the FF casing. This may cause it to fire too often, but better than not at all...

An excellent illustration that it is not what camera you have, but what you do with it that makes all the difference. I'm still trying to get a premiere trophy quality portfolio using my SLR!

A well deserved win Rob.
And thanks for pointing out that you beat us all using only a compact  :-[    ;)

my most profitable photo so far was taken with an old A40 Point and shoot :)
With only had a single external flash...
And all you had to do was hit her till she cried!

Unless anybody knows better, I believe it was won by Andy Morse in 2002 using a Kodak Easyshare camera.

My Gibson units work (I believe) on visible as well as infra red light and as such will trigger underwater (at least when I've put them in pools etc).  See here

Heres mine:

underwater-digital-camera-p-572.html

Just got it last week. I think it's very nice for snorkeling cause it can go as deep as 3 meters. Not so bad for a cheap camera from underwater digital cameras cheap shops.
