Rescue at Gautries.

I put the link up for interest: first 'dive-out' rescue in Derbyshire for 20 years. Was the last one Dido's?

Those criticising the rescuees should note Bill Whitehouse's comments in the article. And remember that hindsight has 20/20 vision.

Too much criticism will surely discourage some cavers from calling out a cave rescue.
I was equipment officer for DCRO for many years and I don't ever recall any rescuers openly complaining about cavers who needed rescuing.

I don't think anyone is criticising - it may look like that but as has already been pointed out above, it's just piss taking by others who know them.

Personally I think they were glad for the extra digging time until somone in diving gear arrived unannounced and insisted on taking them out of the cave...

I think that if their wives / partners / concubines had anything about them they would immediately confiscate these reckless fools caving gear until they can prove they are mature and sensible enough to return to the caving scene. God forbid that these morons ever have children! ::)

although it might not feel like it when the phone goes off rescuers love the job and if they dont then let them call some one else co they will.

I believe two of them have been grounded until after their wives have delivered. Fortunately that's not too long.

I wasn't really suggesting anyone was criticising. I know both the people rescued and the rescuers as well as the piss-takers but, I'm sure you're aware that this is in the public domain and may be watched by people like the Daily Mail. Who knows what they will make of it. I was there when all this kicked off and it was really a non-event. They were safe where they were but, because it was continuing to rain, it was decided to bring them out rather than risk exposure by leaving them to wait for the water to go down.

I don't pity the poor people at all, divers are used to getting wet. Next time it might be them being rescued by the Gautries diggers. They're all on the same rescue team.

Don't think the Daily Mail will be too bothered Dave as none of the 3 rescued were Romanian / Bulgarian / Polish* .... (*insert any other nationality that the Mail has it in for).

Well said Mulucaver. I know we all realise there's really been nothing genuinely critical here but it's a point which has wider implications beyond this particular topic. Anyone who doesn't understand that doesn't understand how cave rescue works and the jealously guarded voluntary ethos underpinning it. I'm really pleased you made that point and it exactly matches my own experience of cave rescue work.

It's made the Derby Telegraph, Buxton Advertiser and now the Star so I reckon you can expect the Mail to dive in by tomorrow at latest!

Yes I know you weren't criticising - it was Droid (as I quoted in my post) who believed the comments were real criticisms rather then leg-pulling and I was pointing this out.
I know the details of the incident (and know some of those involved) as well as I was also there.
I was hoping that my pointing out to Droid that no one is actually criticisng but rather mickey taking, then things would be made clearer.
Cavers rescue cavers after all, without any blame attached (there but for the grace of God, etc.) and, yes, there's the issue that fear of criticism or come back after a rescue could cause a party in trouble underground to think twice before dialling 999. But that of course just isn't the case.
There's bound to be an element of mickey taking by those that know the cavers involved especially as they were all safe and uninjured. Unfortunately the element of humour and irony don't come across when the mickey taking is as a forum post.
And yes, a newspaper reporter may end up reading the posts but that shouldn't cause us to have to censor what is posted in case they get hold of the wrong end of the stick.

No, Paul. I can recognise genuine pisstaking (done enough of it myself on here)....I was just clearing the air a bit on my own account.

And no-ones answered my question as to the last dive-out rescue....was it Didos'?

The Didos Cave rescue was in 1982 which is 31 years ago. I don't have a list of call outs before 1998 (as on the DCRO website) so there may have been another diving related incident 20 years ago in 1993 or thereabouts (after Didos and earlier than 1998) in the Peak District.

Anyone else know?

No idea for the Peak, but there was that well documented dive-out in the Dales in 1992 from Sleets Gill.

You can get incident reports (showing incidents for all cave rescue orgs) back to 1995 via the BCRC website.
