Excellent paper and very thought provoking. There is a lot to take in and I will have to read this more than once. Having studied leadership and helped organisations develop their leadership capital as career, this definitely adds to our knowledge and received wisdom around who should lead and when. Conventional leadership can work well, but only in conventional situations. When the muck hits the fan, then unconventional leadership comes into its own. Trouble is, unconventional leaders do not always look, dress and behave like leaders 'should'. It takes a wise conventional leader to recognise this like that Thai Admiral did, and allow those who can, to get on and do. Hats off to the cave divers, and conventional leaders who can break the mould with the courage and humility to allow true experts to shine. Could do with some of them in our politics, nationally and globally right now!
