Smoking in Caves

Just a quick question to see what the general consensus is on the subject of smoking cigarettes in caves.

Would folk consider this to be quite acceptable, or a grave breach of cave conservation standards?

Thanks.

Nothing to do with conservation but consideration for others. The next person through the cave might be a none smoker or even someone with a lung disease for whom smoke can cause all sorts of problems.

Personally, I hate the smell of tobacco smoke  :yucky: and the first time someone smoked underground with me would be the last trip I would ever do with them.  To me, smoking in any confined space, above or below ground, is just inconsiderate unless it's your own place and non-smokers don't have to put up with the smell during or afterwards.

Strong views?  Perhaps, but then smoking killed both my parents (lung cancer and heart attack) so perhaps my views aren't that surprising.

On an overnight trip with some smokers, they did smoke in cave. I am super sensitive to smoke but they did do it in a huge room with good airflow and went downwind. I barely smelled it at all. Do I think it's right to smoke in caves? Hell no. If you are that addicted to it where you have to on a very long trip? Hopefully at least it's done consideratly...large room with very good airflow.

Personally I think it's totally unacceptable to smoke underground (I am slightly biased as a non-smoker).  I had a lengthy debate on another forum about it.  My issue was someone smoking in a mine where there is still evidence of gelignite.  On the other hand, one of the arguments was a caver who wen't to light up underground and whose lighter wouldn't work.  It was only this that highlighted the fact they were running out of air and quickly got out of the tunnel.  I think I'd prefer to buy a meter than take up smoking though  :ang:

And?

Doesn't Gelignite need a detonator to make it explode? Bloody hope so, or the caver I saw in The Hill 30 years ago tossing a stick of the stuff around in a pub full of smokers was taking a helluva risk.....

An extract from http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2011/03/how-to/how-to-handle-gelignite

When asborbed through the skin of the fingers, gelignite can cause headaches, so wear latex gloves. Be careful when storing it too: gelignite becomes less stable over time, and can "weep" with age.

Radio off
Nitroglycerine, the main component, explodes at a velocity of 7,700m/s but only when a small charge is detonated. Some charges, usually aluminium or copper tubes, can be set off by radio transmitters.

Is this really something cavers want to discuss on a public forum?
That's stuff's very old technology now anyway.

Back on topic - I'd argue long and hard for the right for anyone to smoke if they want to (as long is they don't force others to as well in the process). It's all about common sense really.

I remember (forty years ago, so don't worry Pitlamp) sitting next to a wood fire in a club hut when one of members came in, sat down, & threw something on the fire. "That burns well", I thought. "Wonder what it was." And then "where's everybody else gone?"

It was indeed gelignite that had not been used but had got too wet, in a leaky ammo box, to go back into storage.

Be careful newstuff doesn't see this, he likes a smoke!

Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of it, if a caver becomes impaired by his or her craving for a ciggie while underground, then i would rather they smoked than didn't. But on the whole I'm anti smoking.

When I smoked i thought i was cool, now i realise i was just tragic.

I'm a smoker ( seems im the first to admit it ) and I'm one that takes non smokers into consideration when i do smoke i even wont smoke in my own house/car if we have friends around that don't smoke ,
i would never dream of smoking in a cave or underground even i think that is wrong, i also can go on long trips and do not feel the need to have a smoke, but i will own up to having a packet of Nicorette mini Lozenges in my survival pouch
