What club were you with and do you remember who was leading the trip, BTW?

Hi, That might conceivably be possible, but in all the many trips I've made down there don't recall seeing any in the main chamber.
It wasn't with a club just a small group of friends. Given how many years ago this was, I cant remember who was leading..

If you get the opportunity have a look at the main chamber when Fell Beck is in high flood, you'll be surprised I think about the noise and the draught that circulates.
This may be a factor in the lack of straws in that area. Take a firework with you for lighting and you'll really appreciate the splendor and size of this geological feature.

We'd need a positively huge firework (or 10) to show off the impressive largest chamber in the country- GB!!

Hughie The largest fireworks you can have by law is 10kg. At present I can let you have this in the shape of a single ignition cake called Roman Myth. However if you want me to come down and bring some serious shit in the form of big ariel shells (cat4 not for public use) Then let me know the biggest I have in stock are 8 inch komuru shells so I hope gb is a least 1500 ft high or it will hit the roof

Should be plenty of room, eh, Hughie?

Absolutely. Not sure what Graham, Cap'n'Chris et al would think, though.

Racingsnake - that does indeed sound like some "serious shit"!

Yep rated as 1.1G in explosive terms. May soon be of NO use due to expected changes in HSE transport regs

Blimey! 1500ft!! They're not so much fireworks as anti-aircraft munitions!

Chris I wouldnt worry too much if they do let it off the rescue and clean up will be easy, I think a bin bag and a shovel will be the only required rescue kit. Might make the cavern bigger and better too.

I wouldn't ever have dreamed of smoking underground. Nasty evil weed, most foul etc etc (I gave up Monday!)

Already signs of the "reformed smoker" are appearing. Hovers around whenever I'm having one, inhaling deeply!

Spoil sport!! :)

While I acknowledge that it may well be great fun to experience the noise/light etc. of fireworks going off in a closed environment such as a cave the problem is that people who engage in something like this may plant the seed of an idea in the minds of other people who will then wish to check it out for themselves - in which case they'll want to pick a cave where they can gain easy access and exit swiftly if needs be - a common cave for this purpose is Goatchurch Cavern main entrance where it is common to find litter of many types including fireworks (at this time of year). However, GC is again one of those caves which bats large moth-like creatures use (also at this time of year) and setting off fireworks is disturbance of the highest order! The bang of the firework also releases a large amount of fine paper wadding which is litter too small to bother collecting, but litter nonetheless. The fumes are also polluting etc. etc... you get my gist, I'm sure.

So, yes, I am being a spoil sport but IMHO for good reason.

I'm not being entirely serious, Chris.
I would think the remains of fireworks at Goatchurch entrance are not left there by genuine cavers. Real cavers would either take them in further, or go to a much more spectacular cave.

Sorry, I'm being facetious.
