Fireworks in caves?

Didn't they use to let off charges of gunpowder in Peak Cavern to entertain the visitors?

2007 is the year set by Scotland for the "Tobacco Not To Be Sold To Anyone Under 18"

This will set a president for The United Kingdom.

Well done Scotland

 Why doesnt the govt. raise the age tobacco can be sold to people by one year, every year?

That way it wouldn't affect existing smokers (or criminalise shopkeepers for selling to 17 year olds!). The benefits (and taxes!) wouldn't be affected much short-term but in 40 or 50 years time the only smokers left would be the elderly (who would have proved they can survive!) and foreign tourists.

Finally! A legitamate use for National I.D. cards, as proof of age/entitlement? - You want to smoke, you need to buy one!  :coffee:

Just a thought, if I insisted on dropping stink bombs in caves or other enclosed places, or played really loud bad music (like Vanilla Ice, U2 etc) because I enjoyed it, would smokers complain?

Can't really understand why this thread has reached 9 pages - don't recall ever seeing anyone smoking in a cave. andymorgan - U2 = bad music - you have absolutely no class!!! ;)

Actually having police using existing laws would be nice. Instead of police offices being replaced by cameras. Am I wrong in thinking you have to be 16 to buy tobacco? Then how do school children get them, any adults buying for then I 'think' not sure are also breaking the law (might just be beer that).

Anyway raising the age, yeah good idea but wont work unless we get the existing laws enforced. Everyone's too interested in bring out more and more laws. Enforce the existing ones. Do shop keepers need a licence to sell tobacco? if they do remove it instantly they sell to someone under age.

Ditto beer...

ID Cards don't get me started on the police state we live in, 49 peace's of personal information to make an ID card.

Thousands of council staff are being trained to police the smoking ban in bars, restaurants and shops in England.

Ministers have given councils £29.5m to pay for staff, who will be able to give on-the-spot £50 fines to individuals and take court action against premises.

I expect it will apply in show caves
and trips led by paid people and the people they lead. (y)

I am quite sure that no self-respecting show cave owner has allowed smoking on their property for many, many years.

Smoking underground is contrary to the Ethical Caving Code, to which all cavers who are members of BCA are automatically signatories, IIRC.

There isn't a link. The relevant section in the present/previous NCA Code of Ethics is "Underground: section 6" however I know that the ECC and MICC are being reviewed and republished shortly under the BCA heading and smoking is also mentioned in the new ECC.
