I know and understand that cavers are totally against restrictions to access.

Really? News to me.

I thought conservation-minded cavers understood the absolute necessity of gates. The present situation at Swildon's is the price you/we pay for unfettered access.... stuff gets broken/nicked/spraypainted/shat on.

Good.

Answer this simple question:

Would such damage as happened in Swildons ever happen in St. Cuthberts?

Come on, DP. Go and lie down for a bit. We can't have you going underground in that condition.

Why does it takes me to solve this naff problem for you  :tease:

Blockoff the Blockhouse full stop, so members of General Public would see they cant get in!!!! clever ain't I

The cavers with common sense that is, can go in the hole through the tree route.

If you are too fat to enter then follow Cap n chris diet regime (I'm sure he be delighted to help  :ras:)
If it's too scary and for you dangerous then you shouldn't bloody be in Swindons but stick to Goatchurch. :ras:

Personally I don't see the problem with the graffiti, only when the cave  gets covered with graffiti does it becomes a concern   :coffee:

Actually I find the second more interesting.

No, gates are not the answer to everything. Keep installing gates and watch membership drop while more and more people despise the nanny state attitude. Like I said the BCA/CSCC etc do not represent the view of all cavers/underground explorers.

Excessive gates will result in the removal of the excessive gates as a demonstration of views ignored.

I don't mean Gates... Block it off with concrete at the Blockhouse and let them try to enter !!  o_O   Can see the rebellion against me... but think about it.. at least we can start thinking about digging Victoria Dig and encourage more cavers to enter Priddy Green Sink way  :alien:

I think the landowner might have something to say about what happens to the access of this site, don't you? We can argue all we like about it but it's not our decision to make.

Followed rapidly by excessive blocking of entrances by pissed off landowners and excessive punching of vandals by excessively pissed off honest cavers.

Surely this is the work of schoolboys.

It strikes me as the sort of graffiti a schoolboy would do. Perhaps the CSCC should have a word with schools that run trips into such places.

Apparently an 'eminent' localish well known school are known to visit quite frequently.

Schoolboys sounds most likely. Of course if you leave it in a few years time people will be able to speculate about it's origin and write books about what this means for our understanding of neolithic culture. Writing on the walls seems to be something people have always done in caves.
