Taping in Swildon's Hole

Anyway putting a gate on Swildons in the huge concrete and stone blockhouse wouldn't really be any more unsightly!

A discrete bit of string/orange cord in trat's strikes me as a good idea, especially if it's possible to clean the crud off the rest. Most damage, though not all, will be caused by passing cavers who don't see the "best" route, rather than by deliberate vandalism, and for myself, I'm always happy if a single route is marked clearly to prevent me causing damage before I see what's being conserved. The orange cord really isn't that intrusive.

... erm, I suppose you could shoot them, although I suspect that in our over-regulated nanny state this is possibly illegal nowadays (perhaps someone could check and report back).

I think that the insertion of the broken stalagmite into a suitable orifice should suffice!! That should at least keep the size of the broken bits down.

Chris you know tape isnt going to deter vandals in an open access cave, its only natuaral barriers that can do that. I dont think your efforts to tape will provide the protection you hope it will....sorry mate, not being negative, just think you'd be wasting your time.

On a separtate note if the rumours I here are correct; in that names are known. I do think charges should be brought for the recent vandalism as its a good message to get out.

Hi, Mr The Badger; the tape is unrelated to cave damage - its intended function is not to act as a barrier against vandalism; it's to mark out a path which would reduce spreading of mud onto presently unclean (but clean-able) bits of pretty stuff. If the path is considered unacceptable there seems little point in spending lots of time cleaning. I suppose it would be possible to place a tape and see how long it remains in situ - and if it stays then the cleaning could begin....
