Tennis elbow and caving

Hello,
Due to too much caving on holiday over new year I have managed to get tennis elbow, this hasn't stopped me caving so far, but after a trip last Saturday it has become somewhat more painful, so will probably stop me caving now. I was just wondering if anyone has any fantastic cure or just advice about what is the best thing to be doing.

Im really suffering with it at the moment. its got to the stage that when I grip the rim on my pint pot to lift a pint - it hurts.  :cry:

I think for me its a combination of a whole load of things thats caused it. Years of Climbing, followed by 5 years caving - then a sudden return to climbing down the climbing wall. Only been a few times this year - but each time I do - I over cook it and injure myself.  o_O

Im also looking at the way my keyboard & mouse are set up at work. I've noticed that my right shoulder/elbow are 'really' painful after a week of nights (like Im on this week). Thats because the office gets pretty cold, and Im sat for 10 hours surfing the web - (if its really quiet at work of course  :sneaky:)

Still not come up with any solutions, I need to talk with the HR folks at work.

On the verge of going to the physio.

Im a full advocate of physio therapy.  Its a much shunned part of medicine. The british stiff upper lip attidude leads us to beleive you have to have been through a hidious car smash inorder to warrant physio.  Aches and pains we should just live with.

Look at pro footballers, they get hours of physio every week, even day. Yet an 8 hour trip down a wet crawly cave is probably far more damaging to a cavers joints than 90 mins of footie is to footballer. (actually - thats complete supposition and not based on any medical facts  :coffee: )

Anyhow - I've got myself some of them rubber resistance bands, so I can start doing some stretching and resistance work at me desk, and one of those nsd powerballs, (not sure if they are a gimmick or not - but I say try everything and find out what works)>

As well as caving can driving a car for prolonged periods aggravate it too Peter?

Possibly. I had a mild one from months after a mountain bike ride over rough ground.

Physiotherapy is the way to go.  Mostly it's very easy stretching and exercising.  Have had to work on my shoulder and elbow in the past, with very quick results (even after waiting many months).

SamT, I temporarily switched to 'mousing' with my left hand for a few months, only took a few days to get the hang of it.  I think more of these types of injuries are from the office as much as from caving...

Acupunture worked well aided by a cortisone injection.

I've got an elasticated elbow support which really helps.

Sam - You must have Pint Pot Elbow - very common in cavers!! :beer:

I got 'tennis elbow' caving - following through on a backhand I hit my elbow on a flake!  :LOL: :spank: <= Joke!

Rest first, then after a week or so if nothing improves, go for physio. Those rubber bands for gentle resistive exercise seem to be a good idea.
Had physio from Phil Paske (now England Rugby physio) and a rubber band when I had my shoulder rebuild and it certainly worked for me. (y)

Don't do the stiff upper lip English suffering - I went to the doctors just over a year ago with a sore arm and it turned out to be broken - and got a b0ll0cking from the hospital consultant for waiting four days to see if the bruising went down before I went to the doc. :-[
(Yes I do have a history of that, having hobbled round for 2 weeks with a broken leg when I was 18!)

I hope that you get well soon Sam - and does it get you out of nappy changing?

By rebuild do you mean joint replacment? (That's the next step with mine) If so, how you getting on?

No, the ball and socket were OK, it's just that I broke most of the rest of the bones in the area and tore all the ligaments, necessitating two operations to put in a 6" screw and stitch the ligaments, and 3 months on the sick. Luckily all I'm left with is a 12" scar and I can still touch my hands between my shoulder blades.

The timing couldn't have been better though - I moved house on the Saturday into a repossession where they had stripped everything including the light fittings, and then managed 2 minutes of a charity rugby match on the Sunday before a girl took my legs away when I jumped high for the ball causing me to land on the hard ground shoulder first. With being told to not move the shoulder it took me two weeks to reinstall lights into all of the rooms, and much, much longer to unpack.

Although it sounds hideous & excruciating painful it sounds like your rotator cuff is still intact & working. I can't get my hand in my back pocket to get the drinks in anymore ;)
I did mine falling off my bike when 13 BTW, so rather off topic - sorry

Well lads would have known not to take my legs away whilst I was in the air.

The last twice I played for my local Young Farmers I ended up in hospital (knocked out and fractured neck), so I retired my wife made me see sense! But this was only going to be a gentle charity match about 10 minutes each person - what could go wrong?

Caving is so much safer. :) :) :)


Shotlighter - the cup was OK - I hope that your op is successful.
