I'm staying out of this argument :coffee: I like caving wether its Yorky,Dales,South Wales, FOD,Mendip(where i first started)or Devon. They all have there own charms.
As for cavers in different regions i've got on with all off them and enjoyed caving with them, they all like to show off there own favourite caves/pots mines.
Beer's pretty good all round to.
Am i being a bit off a crawler? ::)

You mean that the biggest chamber in Yorkshire is in Yorkshire (obvious really  ;) )

I hope folk understand, i never initially intended this to be a bitch war about the largest chamber. If some yorkshireman wrote on his website that yorkshire housed the largest shaft/pitch/etc...etc you derbyshire lot would be the first to correct..um. With regards the largest chamber, who gives a shit whether the mendips as the largest chamber, which it may well have although GG main chamber's will always be untill proven otherwise + i doubt it could ever be as breathtaking as gg's, even if the mendips did dosen't mean i'm gonna visit the place.

So Les, how big is this GB thing then (in cubic metres)?  Is it The Gorge you're referring to or have you found something new?  Just curious, as I have done a fair bit of caving in (sorry: "on") Mendip.

No the Gorge is just a feeder passage to GB Main Chamber, I'm not sure anybody has done an accurate measurement of volume, there are many difficulties such as determining where the chamber ends and the passages start, also it is difficult to determine without a very accurate and detailed survey (I know there is one for GG but nobody has done a similar one for GB, perhaps it could be organised) and also there is much mileage is in not actually knowing (if we knew then it would stop the arguments/debate, no fun there  ;) )

Aha - you've taken the wind out of my sails Les; I've been pondering on the difficulty of deciding where a chamber starts and finishes / what should be considered a shaft or a passage instead etc.  You're probably right; an element of uncertainty adds interest!

Keep on digging; you'll find it one day.

Twice on my visits up to Sunny Yorkshire, I have been privalaged to climb down
Notts Two, then amble up what I think is the most stunning streamway in England!
Now that dug hole, About 30 metres ota, if i remember the very friendly Yorkshire men from Bull Pot Farm (who were so proud of their new cave, they virtually forced us to go down it, thanks, ever such a lot btw)
my longwinded question is

which area has the deepest more or less man made caving shaft.

Is it  a) Mendip, Templeton Pot
        B) Yorkshire, Notts Two
        C) Forest of Dean, Miss Graces' Lane
        D) Derbyshire, the new entrance shaft to Titan

Answers in an argument please, there, I've started off by being polite, not a good start on this thread.

This whole thing about Yorkshire being the "mecca". Is it because:

The longest cave is in Wales
The deepest cave is in Wales
The biggest chamber is on Mendip ;)
The longest pitch is in Derbyshire
The deepest sump is on Mendip
The most rescued caver lives in Scotland (or is it Cheddar?  :-\ )

:coffee:

Size isn't everything graham!

Anyway, it's all pretty obvious to me ... Inglesport Cafe's Lemon Cake. You can't get that on Mendip! ... or Colin's pints at the Helwith Bridge for that matter.

Are there?  I'm not so sure.  I would say the Chamber starts at the Bridge and at the portal of White Passage.  The bottom end is less defined but I would suggest that it ends when you pass under the huge jammed boulder below the waterfall.  But, yes it would be a shame in some ways to definitively measure the volume - but then again maybe not it if really did prove to be bigger than GG!  In the meantime there's loads of fun to be have taking a thread on Yorkshire Dales always being the mecca and diverting it into a discussion of Mendip caves.

Yes but we have Roger & Jackies menu board and the best Ale in the Universe, I'd swap Lemon Cake for that any day  (y)

You just don't know what you're missing!

The sad think is I do, and I'm still sat at home working this weekend.  o_O

If you add up all the kilometres of passage, would Wales have more than Yorkshire. How would the other areas compare as well?

Wasn't there an article in Descent a while back estimating the total lengths of passage in each of the areas of the UK?

I'll have a look through the back issues this evening if I'm bored enough
