    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

What do you do when not caving?

This should invoke a few postings.........!

So, what do y'all do when you are not caving?

I mainly care for my wife. I'm also a part-time volunteer worker for a large national charity organisation that works along-side Social Services, where I organise and help run outdoor activities for underpriviledged young adults.

Also enjoy riding my GS1100 on the finer days, going to rallies and getting totally smashed (biker through and through)!

And when I'm not doing all that, I'm Caving....!!!

Mainly bouldering and until I injured my foot (it's finally getting better) Thai Boxing.

Though the last week or two has seen me locked into an xbox playing the fantastic Halo 2 online. Sad but fun.

Other than that I mainly mess about on t'internet or sit in traffic to and from work :(

When not caving (bit more regularly than i should admit of late), i find sitting in the pub talking about caving makes a good substitute. After all, its how hard you talk, not how hard you cave, right????

I also find climbing, and optimistically waiting for winter to hurry up and get going in scotland to go... climbing properly, do quite well.

On occasions i've even been seen going to uni. Something about becoming a dentist, whatever that is!

Wouldn't worry about the uni too much tubby two. I'm in my final year of medicine and i reckon the whole studying thing is overrated. ie - i have finals next week but spent this weekend caving in the dales and getting blindingly drunk.

Thinking about caving

I married an American seven and a half years ago and moved to the states.... the nearest [good] caves are 700 miles away in any direction. So I plan trips down UK caves many years in advance and then hope the weather cooperates when I get there. This forum holds back homesickness.

I built a house two years ago... and I am still working on that. I also have a 15 month old daughter who keeps me busy. I'm also working on a Master's degree. I do lots of walking these days and in the winter I go snowshoing and winter camping [temperatures regularily drop to minus thirty celcius] in local wilderness areas. I also bike quite a bit.

Living miles from any caves I can't just pop down when I want!

Having a wife who doesn't cave (well not since she fell off the ladder in Swildons after getting a bit Hyperthermic on the Short Round) and a young family tends to put a bit of a downer on it. :(

I also seem to have a habit of loosing digging partners - the last three have all emigrated to Australia

But my eldest daughter has started caving now, so I should be able to get away a bit more. My wife won't let me buy my daughter an SRT kit for a few years though!

This forum is an absolute lifeline!

Think about what toys i'm going to buy next. Hmm, pair of ice axes or a mountain bike?
Closely followed by trying to convince people to go caving/climbing (for some reason lots of people seem to be worrying about dissertations at the moment).

:bash: Try to persuade my friends or aquaintances that it is a good idea to go caving. For some reason they think every Saturday and Sunday is too much :hyper:

If I'm not on customer site I am at home stage testing equipment (I have a load of wireless kit in my living room I am configuring) while doing that sat here thinking about what I am doing when I am not underground. Looking at pictures and videos of the underground on my album.

...Charging my FX5, oh crap I got to pop it on charge for tonight. I'm off to some caves in Bristol tonight :) bye..
