Hi dave,

Excuse me for asking, but are you a caver?

I'm just a bit puzzled by your posts as they seem a bit off-beat and non-caving related....

Perhaps he is a fisherman. Has all the hallmarks of a trawl rather than a genuine post! Come out Dave the Cave and tell us what your motives really are, I for one am intrigued.

just touching on the uk.rec.caving and the "negative attitude they gave this place when it started up" bit...
I was one of those who was scpetical, but this was for the very reason that bubba stated in his post.
i did not "think the UK caving community [was] big enough to support a lot of forums" and was worried that this was just a case of "my forum is better than your forum" that i had sadly seen a few times before.
Having said that I've seen this board develop and the few advantages of NNTP vs WWW (non "owned" and no registration required) have been outweighed by the useability of this BBS.

Cheers Bubba, you're doing a great job and this is a good product.

Andy since you ask (or tease)

I get out caving most weeks, and have been doing so for 15 years or so.

Recently I have taken an interest in mines and have found other forums a useful source of information.

I have not found a need for caving notes/news/forums. But was intrigued and pleased to find this forum. .

My caving information needs are basically how to get a key and where can I get a survey. But since I have been doing it for so long. I can usually find out from someone I know.

This probably means I will not chat or make many postings on this
forum.

But I come with my own baggage about forums and owners. I know people who set up web pages for trip reports, but harboured dot.com dreams and finally settled for google adverts. Since published articles read better than most trip reports -- forum magasines are the next step. Actually they might fit my needs better than the forum record.
But I am not about to help them..

Would it be a fair (non generalisation) summary to put you under the heading of "Reader, not writer"?

Chris

I read more than I write
I write more than most people, but probably not you.
I organise most of our trips.
I write our club blog.
I ask questions when I need to..
I answer questions if I can.

I answered your question because you were good enough to
answer mine.

Even though I would rather not chat.

Enough

One thing, 'settled for Google ads'... that may be down to the expense of actually hosting and maintaining a webpage, webspace and hosting doesn't come that cheap for an individual, so i wouldn't automatically knock Google ads as I think for some people they may be the obvious choice in order to keep a page alive rather than just not paying the hosting and domain registration and going offline.

Another thing, in reposnse to the question regarding Chris' professional status - it doesn't matter, Chris contributes to the forum as a user just like the rest of us, and if it became the case that he was abusing that position, then it would be dealt with.

Please don't doubt the motive and goodwill behind this site, it is nothing short of brilliant.

Permit me a question in idle chat..

Are you a professional caver or outdoor pursuits instructor?

If so ..

Dave

I am many things including these (IIRC it used to say as much in my profile but that was before the new look forum kicked in) but I'm also mostly an amateur caver, a sports caver, a timid caver, a conservation caver, a voluntary caver, an occasional solo caver, a digging caver, an occasional club caver, a helpful* caver, a frequent non-club caver, a rubbishy caver (i.e. could always do better) and apparently a part-time courageous caver (but you'd need to ask other people what their definition of that happens to be since I don't think I do anything particularly epic).... oh and an annoying caver!

* At least, I'd like to think so!

... OH, and what does the "If so..." allude to? I don't know whether there's something I'm supposed to guess by this... Is it one of those "If you earn a living from doing something then you have a vested/skewed interest" kind of comments?

Hence my 'even if....' comment- dave the cave, if you have some sort of ulterior motive, or vested interest, let's have it - then some sort of discussion can take place, who knows, it may even help society in the greater scheme of things.

If not,  :icon_321:

Please feel free to PM me at any point if you wish to chat.....  ;)

How is having google ads harbouring dot.com dreams? That's a pretty cynical and unrealistic attitude. Setting up and maintaining a website takes time and money. Why shouldn't people try to cover their costs? A few google ads isn't going to make anyone in the caving arena any significant amount of money; let's be realistic.

What exactly is a "forum magasine" (sic), or "the forum record" ?

Help them do what?

I'm struggling to see why you bothered signing up here at all. You can read everything as a guest. All your posts have either been quite frankly bizarre questions about the ownership of the site, and a general negativity towards forums. Why bother?

Why indeed, if you don't want to enjoy the fellowship of the forum?

It's a great place to chat about caving (and other things), tell silly jokes, discuss the best pub to go to after a trip, ask how to fix a broken bit of kit, or just make yourself feel homesick 'cos you're a looong way from Derbyshire....  There are some good accounts of trips and some very nice photos, and interesting discussions on all sorts of things from sea caves to cows and how to get rid of pee in dry passages...

Some of us are active cavers, some of us seem to be hyperactive cavers, some are armchair cavers and has-been cavers and would-be cavers and I do believe one or two of us are "professional" cavers - but I have never seen anyone touting for custom or using the forum to advertise their services in that respect.

I've only one complaint to make about this forum - it's too addictive!

Or maybe that's just me... :-[

Google ads?  They are so unobtrusive I can't remember seeing 'em!  :doubt:

Oh crap... this is a caving forum... I must be in the wrong place.  Beware of Dave the Cave... he's a spy... a mole (oh, that's right, he's (do we really know he is male?) a caver... so there must be some mole in him!).  Maybe Dave the Cave is really that guy who talks about M***dale all the time.

Bubba... I love this place... it's fair!  Keep up the fine work.

CN.

There was someone else on this forum earlier this year with an 'unusual' attitude. He wasn't a caver and, sadly, his manner here made him precious few friends, if any.
