Good job all that picturesque red and white tape is there. Imagine the damage that would be caused without it. :doubt:  :spank:

It's a shame OFD 2 wasn't taped when first explored/Top Entrance was opened. The entire area is polished and trashed, although the taped areas are now recovering. Admittedly OFD Top Entrance area probably gets a lot more traffic than that bit of Draenen, but it doesn't take much to change the character completely.

I mean, some polish is inevitable, but it doesn't have to be the whole width of a wide passage...

All those ' delicate' rocks are covered in actually delicate crystals of course. There's only one line of tape that I can see and it doesn't even really stand out in the photo!

Sorry to derail the topic. It just was a tongue in cheek comment about the overall quantity of that tape in the cave.

I agree that it's a fantastic photo.

Thanks Huge, was a real team effort getting the kit there and taking the shot.

MarkS hopefully everyone can tell the difference between some tounge in cheek ribbing and serious comments.

Not forgetting that caving photos do not have to be set up and posed although they are obviously technically good. This from last night. Photography should be fun as well as an art. Also a record.

I couldn't agree more.  I love the shots that just sort of happen (not sure those being photographed always agree though).  This was in Dr Bannisters Hand Basin last week...

For interest this image was taken using a couple of underwater video lights and an Olympus TG6 set on Program.  It shows my granddaughter on her second caving trip.

Is that LL II in South Wales ?

I dont know where I am going, but will know where I am when I get there.

And now for something completely different!

Photography has been prohibited for over a decade in Actun Tunichil Muknal cave. I am therefore hugely privileged to have received special permission to catalogue some of the best preserved examples of artifacts from the late classic period (700/900AD) of the Maya empire. Calcified where she / or he fell (Depending on which expert you talk to)
The Crystal Maiden lies deep within the cave. One of over a dozen sacrifices entombed here as offerings to the gods of the underworld. the lower spine shattered in what must have been an horrific death.

Below an alter containing a huge obsidian blade. The Maya would use these blades to cut part of the body in blood letting rituals called ch'ahb as a way to communicate with their gods and ancestors. These ceremonies would usually be performed by only the highest nobles, who would cut their tongues, lips and genitals, before dripping the blood on to parchment to be burnt as an offering.

Stunningly preserved architecture from Caracol, Belize. Crafted during the golden age of the Maya empire from the Classic Period which began 250AD.

Shame there's a limit of three pictures - I'd happily look at a lot more!

However Monday is definitely the start of another week!

Renowned archaeologist Holley Moyes explains the significance of these stunning hand crafted pots. Offered to the Maya gods, these were especially prolific during time of drought and would often be located in and around inlets, dripping speleothems and shelves above stream ways. Looking like they had just been placed, it was hard to believe they had laid there for well over a thousand years.
