Ah, the European question.  Didn't we leave the EU so we wouldn't have to follow what they said...er

We left the EU but not Europe......the message above is from the FSE, not the EU.

Does BCA have anything to say apart from their message about award holders?

This is all so unprecedented that I’m not surprised messages are coming out in dribs and drabs.

There's a difference between following it to the letter (which I am) and going digging. And we're all kind of in this together we need to keep hospital beds free etc. Could be your elderly family member who needs one.

The thread subject relates to over 70s. I do take exception to anything like this which I see as a generalisation based on a pre-conception.

I do actually have people standing in front of me referencing my martial arts interests and asking what a bloke in his 70s can do

I take great credit from being at a level where I can deal without actually hurting someone, well except for once.

Hi Roy I don't think people shouldnt dig because they are over 70 I just think we should all change our habits to reduce the risk of needing a hospital bed. I've binned off all my planned trips. Nothing personal and I've pretty much said all my thoughts now. I normally have a rule that I never argue online as its pointless!

Yep I re-read my posts and I might have sounded like a bit of a knob (probably boredom with lockdown :p ) I could easily lose my job due to the reduction in trade we're seeing so the next few months will be shit for all of us! I think this virus has a nasty combination of lethality and transmitability. Any more lethal and it wouldnt spread as much (dead people don't spread it) and any less lethal and it wouldn't matter! But I'm not a virologist so may be talking bollocks.

Does anyone on here have any information about how long this virus can survive outside of the human body, such as on objects that have been handled by an infected person?

My China deliveries posting was intended in jest, but it does raise a point.
Stuff was ordered long before the outbreak and Lithium ion batteries have to come in overland and must be handled by x number of people.

Depends strongly on temperature and humidity but the longest figure I heard was 30 days. I think a fairly strong solution of bleach will deactivate the virus but don't quote me on that.

But you are not Human Roy !!  :o :o

Seriously if you are concerned at product being handled by lots of infected Chinese and others  use disposable  gloves to open the pack and wipe the items  with a light bleach solution or suitable cleansing wipes with decent anti bacterial content

as this is for roy "light bleach solution" means bleach with water, not bleach with a bat cooker shinning on it ;D

Three days surely? On certain surfaces. Easily dealt with with a cleanse/wipe with a mild bleach solution.

This morning I did a bit of a count of how many times I touched a surface or am item that will have been touched by another. So packet of cereal, milk bottle, wheelie bin etc. I stopped at 100 by 11am due to do it getting tedious. I only had to not wipe that surface or wash my hands afterwards to be at risk from contamination.

It was 30 days sorry! Not representative of all surfaces though, 30 days on metal at 4 degrees C, worst case scenario.

Edit: 30 days (28 actually) is the worst possible case and a bit tenuous; some coronaviruses can 'survive' (they aren't alive so 'remain active' is better) on some surfaces for 28 days at low temperatures. More realistic data doesnt seem as bad.

I have bought a couple of Chinese lenses in the last couple of weeks and ahem, I'm not infected.

I read somewhere that the virus can live for up to 10 days on plastic and glass but cannot survive for long on wood. Whether that's good information or mere speculation, I don't know but it seems reasonable that the virus would be killed quickly by wood.

It would be good to know more about people who have beaten the virus and regarding any progress on anti-viral drugs. Apparently Zika was sequenced and an anti-viral was developed within three months. No doubt that period will be much shorter for coronavirus. Getting the treatment to the people will be the difficult bit.

I think what I will do is to put arrivals on one side and delay opening until needed.

Re the wiping, I am thinking about the shortage of disinfectants etc due to the panic buyers.
By way, I have been described here as "blase" but to my credit I have not exacerbated a situation by panic buying and stockpiling, just normal shopping.
Still cant figure toilet rolls by the way.

I assume you have stuff already in and wearing gloves reduces the risk

Blase was me Roy, but to give you credit, your recent posts suggest to me someone who is actually thinking about the problem. And I can see why you knee jerked at the prospect of being shut in due to a number on a calendar (age). I would to.

As to the toilet roll wars? It's a definite sign of a certain mindset. Funny enough our local corner shop has got loads left. And pasta!

I think the posts have been constructive and I certainly have no issues. I think that you all now understand my mindset on this.

I wont be staying in as apart from climbing the walls I feel that lack of fresh air and exercise would be injurious to my health and well being. I have a duty of care to others, but also to myself. I shall avoid contact with others as much as possible. Recommend everyone avoids touching people in any way. So much for my casual female relationships.

Whatever I am, it is seriously a hard struggle. I am excising twice a day which includes side splits, working out on a punch bag, and was training 4 nights. Aikido has shut down and karate is uncertain at this time, main venue has closed.

Its difficult times for all, but we are stuck with it and have to make the best of it.
