Dales Weather

There are some great new web sites around for those planning trips to the Dales.

www.ribblehead.org is a new automated weather station located at, you've guessed it Ribblehead. It shows all the usual current weather stuff but also the mm of rainfall since midnight and the rainfall in last 24 hours and if it's currently raining the mm per hour. All useful info especially for the novice caves of the Churns, Birkwith area, Great Douk, Sunset and of course Ribblehead itself. Not to mention Meregill, Blackshiver, Washfold etc.

If you like that check out www.metcheck.com, this site gives weather predictions including rainfall in mm for every 3 hour period, this can be tailored for any UK post code or Lat Long.

There are also mountain forecasts including Whernside, check out the link http://www.metcheck.com/MountainForecast.asp?lat=54&lon=-2&MountainID=126&Arr=151&level=1000 for Whernside with the height set to 1000ft e.g. Ribblehead.

I know a few folk who are monitoring the accuracy of these forecasts/sites but currently they look good.

Use wisely and great caving.

PS Don't forget http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/~arb/cpc/rain.html for water visibility at Helwith Bridge.

I regularly look at
http://www.onlineweather.com/v4/uk/city/Sheffield.html
http://www.meto.gov.uk/weather/europe/uk/yorkslincs_printable.html
http://www.metcheck.com/48hrforecast.asp?lat=53&lon=-1&locationID=67&Arr=163&Country=UK&Coastal=&pc=s80gg
and when the weather looks iffy they often have three different forecasts. Haven't a clue which to choose and often the met office one seems to be the worst.
