Having a nice trip in Peak today with others from our club, we happened upon a couple of guys lighting up.

Hmmm. Not nice. hack, cough.

Ah, the age-old dilemma between "live and let live" and "having respect for your fellow caver". If the smoking issue gets resolved, another one will pop up to take its place.  :(

i think part of the agreetment to enter Peak Cavern includes things like
no carbide
no smoking

whatever you may think of the rights or wrongs of smoking , its still against the access agreement.

Ah, yes indeed. Selfish, not necessarily for making a foul smell for others, but for putting their own pleasures above the prescribed access rules. Disregarding guidelines or access arrangements seems to be quite popular at the moment.

Does smoking underground have any negative effects on formations/flora/fuana? I can't imagine it doing the delicate environment much good, let alone your lungs.
Did you say or do anything to them?

In response to the original post's title, "No".

Suggest you consider shouting REALLY LOUDLY at people to stop smoking. Often works very well.

Not the first time this topic has cropped up, either. For more, see:

I think after shouting REALLY LOUDLY, an 'accidental' splash or two of cold cave water would dampen thier baccy!

Didn't realise this had come up before.

There were about 10 of us and three of them, of which two got their roll-ups out.
One or two of us (not me though - the in-bred chicken in me stopped me) did mutter about smoke/lungs/confined spaces.

We then trogged off back to Squaws and then to Buxton Water Sump and out. We did pass said miscreants again, but nowt was said 'cos then didn't have a ciggie in their gobs.

 it really has to be a case of turning the other cheek, Of the cavers I know who smoke underground, shouting at them would only antagonise them further and would not alter their behaviour one single jot, Splashing water at them would probably result in you getting a broken nose (and I'm serious).

I don't condone smoking underground, I'd personally prefer it if folks didn't do it, but when I go caving and one or two of them spark up at a rest point, so be it. I'm just suggesting that confrontation will get you nowhere.

I heard once that Derbyshire caves / mines suffer at time from the build up of radon gas. Is this correct?

Yep - but it doesn't stop most cavers from going caving.

if it is then cavers that smoke in it's presense of this gas are increasing their chances of lung cancer by a huge factor as chemicals in cig smoke reacts and works bisynegistically with radon... http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/type/lung-cancer/about/lung-cancer-risks-and-causes#radon

and you think for one second that smokers care about the possibility of lung cancer.... durrr.

i dunno about the rules but 2 me it comes down to respect.

Indeed. I do remember some remarkably aggressive posts on here from smokers. Must be all those drugs addling their brains.

I don't smoke and i don't mind if people smoke when i am caving but talking about smoking on here, inside place which we should not be smoking when it might effect access arangments is totaly stupid is it not?

Anyway isn't smoking anywhere in doors where the place is a public place (which a cave is, is it not) is against the law under the clean air act? If that is true then technically it is against the law, never-mind the access agreement. Hippie has the right attitude. I know at least one person who smokes and he has never lit up underground and I don't think the thought has ever occurred for him to do so as I suspect he knows it would just be wrong.

Aside from the smoking issue... this seems to touch on the age old pub debate as to whether caving is an indoor or outdoor sport. GB, for example, must be indoors since you enter via a door.

Sam T, i'm just highlighting the extra risk to those who smoke and are possibly unaware of the added danger. Of cos, most smokers realise the risk to their health, albeit at a point too late to warrent stopping but they might not want to "possibly die" any faster than they already are. Info is on the web, they makes up their own minds. Smoking in caves, although I'd prefer it if folk didn't, ultimately it is down to the individual and how much respect they have for their friends and colleges. I've put up with me mother since birth so I think my damage is done..
