I would have thought having a smoker in your party was a good thing, they will spot CO2 fumes quicker then a none smoker due to the reduced ability to absorb O2.
I should add I am a smoker and have never smoked in a cave that I can remeber, you just can't keep baccy dry or mud free.
I do know one thing that is certain I breath a lot better in caves than I do anywhere else, that suggests to me that cave air really is better than any you find outside a cave.
Maybe that is why I don't smoke down there, no exaust fumes or all the other pollutants pumped into our lungs daily, everyone moans about smoking but god thats minor to everything else you breath every day.
Not seen anyone moan at a car driver yet for clogging up there lungs with the fumes they produce, its not just smokers you know.

I'd just like to say that I'd prefer it if people didn't smoke in caves. I don't smoke cigarettes, never have and I find it fairly unpleasant when folks smoke in caves.

However, this whole thread pisses me off cause I think there's a whole lot of double standards going on.

As Bob pointed out, nobody confronted him at the time, or even politely pointed out the fact that it was banned in peak. Let alone started an aggressive confrontation as has been suggested should happen on here.
No - as per usual, just wait till the safety and comfort of their arm chair before spouting off.

Bubs - I never remember you actually complaining all those times whilst digging the snakes, and from your posts, you sound like the cleanest living soul alive  ;)

Sam,

1. I didn't say anything at the time as I was unsure as to the regulations of smoking in Peak Cavern System. I am now aware after speaking to other cavers regarding the
event.

2. I wasn't the leader of the group - it was only my 2nd time in Peak, and the group was being led by someone with a lot more experience than I, who is a smoker - but doesn't smoke underground. I didn't feel it was my place to comment directly to the person concerned in this instance - although now I know then I shall be polite to the extreme in the future.

As someone else points out above, smoking - if it were permitted, disapates better in a larger area - say Peak Streamway - than at the end of a passage or sump.

I hope Bob does not get the impression that I am for stringing up smokers from the nearest yardarm, but he is entitled to smoke - as all smokers are, wherever it is allowed. I have friends who smoke, and when they come round to my house and want to light up, they ask, then do so outside - It is only polite.

I am not veremently against smoking - everyone has the right to smoke, it is up to them to exercise that right. I have lost two grandparents to smoking related cancers - and one of them had never smoked in her life, but was married to a habitual smoker.

I was mearly pointing out what I came across, and perhaps, rather than some of the aggresive postures adopted by some of the posters, there was a blanket ban on smoking underground?

After all there surely must be more non-smoking cavers than smoking cavers and should they not respect the wishes of the majority?

None of us are perfect in every way....

I found it completely revolting. If you'll remember I used to go down the passage and sit somewhere else. I'm not really one for confrontations - I actually did make it clear I found it unpleasant but nobody seemed to give a shit (addicts are often selfish ;) ) so I left it at that and removed myself from the situation. That doesn't mean that I can't have an internet rant about it on here!!

I'm not particularly "clean living" but whatever I imbibe is my own choice; I don't want somebody else making that choice for me. That's quite an important distinction, no?

Martin/bubs  - I agree with all you say, I too am a non confrontational sort of person.

At least it seems that there has been a happy ending, The person  has actually seen the post, explained himself, and is now aware of the situation in Peak.

Oh and like JonP  - I too am completely perfect

Nope! But I'll try if you reconstructed Flower Pot to my exacting standards!

Can anyone recommend a Lighter that works underground?

I have always felt that a good pipe, cigar or roll up goes down well while chiesling out fossils, mimerals and stal. However I do find that spray painting arrows every 10 foot makes them taste odd, but does allow me to find my way back again easily in the smoke....
