    Broken MYO

I have had a Petzl MYO RXP as a back-up light for many years, but have never needed to use it. When I DID need to use it, however, the blasted thing wouldn't work. If it's a broken contact, can any of you tell me how to open it up? (Yes, I know Monsieur Petzl tells me not to 'attempt to...

    Multiple battery chargers

There are many commercially available battery chargers that will charge individual batteries of various sizes, but are there any that will charge made-up packs of AA batteries? I have packs of 5 x AAs, which will need a charger with an output of more than 6V, and with the capability of...

    Mama Says, Don't Cave

Have any of you read this book, subtitled 'Ergor's Unbelievable Cave Stories', by 'Ergor Rubreck'? Speleobooks in the US have it for sale. I wonder if it's worth getting.

    'Going Underground. The Black Country'

I've come across a catalogue with this book in it, published by Amberley in 2024. According to the blurb, it 'explores ... mineshafts; caves; ... canal and railway tunnels; secret passageways ... ; caverns beneath Dudley Zoo'. Have any of you read it? Is it worth getting?

    Another cave on t'telly

Last Monday (6 Jan), the first episode of the new series of 'Silent Witness'. An old lady drugged and led into a 'cave' and killed. Does anyone recognise the location?

    DCI Banks episode

On Monday 2 December, there was a rerun of an episode 'Buried - Part One' of the DCI Banks series on ITV3. It featured 'the body of an eminent lawyer ... washed up by an underground river.' This series is set in Leeds. Is there such an underground river there? The brief shot of it looked very...

    Barabobath?

There's a feature in Withyhill Cave called Barabobath's Bath. What's the origin of this name? It looks most peculiar.

    Bat Soup origin

I have had images of 'Uncle Ned's Mendip Bat and Wild Mushroom Soup' on my PC for ages, but I don't know who originally produced it. Would somebody please tell me who it was?

    Caving insurance for older cavers

Both the BCA and Snowcard caving insurance schemes have maximum age limits that are too low for me. Can anyone advise me where this old fart can get caving insurance?

    Unused carbide

I have a sealed tin of carbide, of uncertain vintage. Is anyone interested in taking it? Failing that, are there any restrictions on disposing of it?

    Are you there, Fred?

Fred Rattray, if you are still on this forum, would you pm me? A mutual friend would like to contact Jim.

    Barry Hill?

I'd like to ask about Barry Hill's exploits in Agen Allwedd, some 60 years ago! Is Barry on here? If he isn't, would anyone be able to put him in touch with me?

    Speleo Camp Laze, Slovenia

The Gloucester Speleo Soc had a trip to Slovenia in August 2019, and we stayed at the Speleo Camp Laze. There was another group of cavers staying in the bunkhouse there. If any of you were in that group, would you please contact me? I'd appreciate your comments on the place.

    Yellow calcite

I know that copper stains calcite blue, and iron gives a red colour, but what creates a yellow colour, as in the attached photo?

    Caves closest to pubs

It has been suggested (April 2023 UBSS Newsletter) that the Hunters' Lodge Inn Sink is the 'closest cave to any pub (probably in the world!)' I know of one cave which is actually entered through the garage of a bar. Do you know of any other contenders?

    Dan & Helen

From the trailer I've just seen, it looks like next Tuesday's episode of 'Dan and Helen's Pennine Adventure' will feature them descending Alum Pot. I dare say some of you were involved in making this episode. Will they go back up, or will they come out through Long Churn ...?

    Unknown: Cave of Bones

A fascinating film on Netflix. Well-filmed, no excess lighting. It was interesting to see how non-cavers managed underground: "We only go through this crawl one at a time, in case it collapses."!

    Old exploration in Agen Allwedd

Chelsea SS have recently been investigating several high-level passages off Main Passage in Agen Allwedd. They have been visited before, but there are no records of who was involved. In one of them is scratched the date 1961 and some initials, 'RR' and 'RS'. I have not been able to match these...

    Battery charging

I have some questions which I hope the electronically-knowledgeable among you might answer. I have a pack of rechargeable NiMH batteries (nominally 6V, 2.7 Ah) that I charge using a home-made charger. The method I use is to charge them at 0.27 A (the Ah rating divided by 10) for 14 hours. If my...

    More caving cartoons

A while ago I asked if anyone had copies of the Bill Tidy 'caving cartoons', and was pleased to get sent just the very ones I was after. Now there's another I would like to get hold of. It shows a guide leading a party of tourists along a tunnel, and one wall of the tunnel has four large bums...
