Adventures Underground 2nd Edition

Could I just draw fellow forum members' attention to this new book, which will be published shortly?

It's over seven years since Dave Haigh and I produced Adventures Underground and the book is long sold out. Lots of folk have asked where they might still be able to get a copy and we did talk about having a reprint. But so much more new stuff's been found that a completely fresh edition seemed to make more sense. Now, after a lot of hard work, this latest project is about to bear fruit.

All of the chapters are revuise / updated, with a load of extra new material woven in. We wrote three brand new chapters, with extra photographs and surveys (at least one of which hasn't been published elsewhere) so there's a lot more pages. The official date of publication will be the weekend of the Hidden Earth conference next month but it's available for pre-order now and, if the printers get it to Chris and Judith at Wild Places Publishing early, it'll be posted out before the conference to those who have placed early orders.

It gives me pleasure to confirm that, as with the first edition, all authors' foyalties are being donated to a couple of charities. Once again we'll be supporting cave rescue (obviously!) but the other charity which this second edition will benefit is Settle Community Swimming Pool. The latter is an excellent facitilty, in the heart of the Dales caving area which the new book is all about. But it's been struggling a bit lately as the roof blew off in Storm Arwen, bringing a massive repair bill. The pool trustees are still playing financial catch up so we decided to help, mainly because all the area's young children learn to swim there, so if they ever fall into water accidentally they stand a fighting chance of avoiding drowning. (It's because two charities will be receiving the royalties that I thought flagging up the new book on this forum is justified, so my conscience is reasonably clear! Besides, so many forum members have helped with the production of this 2nd edition, in so many ways, it's not just "our" project anyway.)

The most recent Descent 299 has a teaser on page 10 but more details about the new book (and ordering info) are now available in the link below.

Of course, all of our friends who have contributed in various ways appear in the acknowledgements but I'd really like to take the opportunity to offer my personal thanks here. "We couldn't have done it without you" is often casually quoted but in this case it's absolutely true. The input that's been freely given along the way has been quite incredible and you're all helping to support two very worthy causes.

Will you and Dave be at Hidden Earth to sign copies?

Sorry Cavingbiker; as things stand I don't think either of us can make it. But I think we'll have a stock in the Dales soon after HE which we can supply signed if anyone wants that. I think Inglesport may stock it, so we can sign one in advance for you if you'd prefer to get it from there. I'm sure we can sort something out when the time comes.

I don't think your conscience would need to suffer for advertising a caving book on a caving forum, even if you were keeping the royalties. I'd be more upset not to know it was available (eg Bernies Café opening getting advertised on Facebook, but not here).

Either way, sounds like an excellent effort from all involved and I look forward to getting my hands on a copy; I lent my copy of the last edition to my sister inlaw and have never seen it since, so I have the perfect excuse to update my bookshelf. :)

Thanks for your words of comfort Pete! From the outset we made the decision to support charities with the royalties, so anyone who buys a copy will be supporting cave rescue directly (together with the community pool at Settle). The idea being that everyone's a winner, so to speak.

One option may be to ring and reserve? That's what I did with the recently published Dow Cave book.

Yes Ian, I think Inglesport is likely to want to stock it. Maybe Starless River? Easy enough to order direct from the link above though?

Quick update; Chris has just mentioned the new book's at the printers now and may well be delivered early.
So if you do want to place an advance order at Wild Places there's a good chance you'll have it before the launch at the conference.

I can offer a short update, which might help anyone who has placed an advance order (or is thinking of doing).

The new edition is expected to arrive from the printers at Wild Places Publishing next Wednesday (18th September). Anyone who has already paid should have their copies posted out on Thursday 19th.

But . . . this is so close to the conference that it's likely to be quicker to pick up your copy direct from the Wild Places stand rather than waiting for Royal Mail. If you'd prefer the latter, just let Chris & Judith know.

If anyone else wants to pre-order - and you'd prefer to pick yours up at the conference, that's no problem as long as you let them know before Thursday next week.

If something stops you attending the conference unexpectedly, yours can be posted out anyway, straight afterwards.

Dave and I hope you enjoy the new book! As usual it's involved a lot of hard work but we're really pleased with it and the two charities it'll be supporting will benefit until the last copy is sold.

Apparently the new book is being advertised by sellers on Amazon. They don't have stock and I'm not aware of any current plans for them to have any. Wild Places Publishing is the place to get it from (either by mail order or via their stand at the conference).

Quick update; delivery to Wild Places from the printer in 48 hours time. All copies ordered before noon on Thursday will be posted out on Thursday (unless collection from the conference is better for you). Orders received after noon on Thursday will get posted early next week (when Chris & Judith have recovered from the conference!). Hope that helps to know.

Chris just let us know that the delivery from the printers has arrived this morning. Postage will be as described immediately above. It also means we're now certain there will be plenty of copies on the Wild Places stand at the conference this coming weekend. Phew!

Just saying; Chris tells me all those who placed advanced orders have had your books posted yesterday. (Some may possibly arrive today.) Thanks for ordering; you're all helping the two charities this project is supporting.

The fastest way to get a copy now will be from the Wild Places stand at the conference this weekend.
