Reduce the risk and devalue the caving experience? Discuss. :coffee:
At the moment Purple Pot is rigged off a bar, rammed in the mud, "P" bolts would be better.
Anyway if it is not suitable to rig a through trip with "P" bolts what is the purpose of "P" bolts?

Other than to serve as a disussion topic
what is the purpose of "P" bolts?

S'got nuffin' to do wiv me, guv. I just live 'ere. But I will add this: the Rods-Bath through trip was only recently engineered and CSCC hasn't had a meeting during the interim and, unless I'm mistaken, the topic of P-bolting Rods-Bath hasn't been forwarded for inclusion on the agenda for the December meeting and.... even if it was (sigh) there's already bolts (diggers') in Bath Swallet, there are TWO iron bar belays for pull-throughs in Purple Pot, notwithstanding that the trip is NTR for capable cavers, and.... (sigh again), Shower Pot has superb natural belays available for rigging (including SRT!) if you wish to pursue that option (although frankly I'd be prepared to say that I don't much like the sharpness of Shower Pot and the risk of damaging rope, and the fact that the pitch head is far from ideal for SRT etc. etc..). I think the likelihood of bolts being put into this particular cave in the short term is low although if the CSCC meeting determines that it's a BRILLIANT idea that should go ahead IMMEDIATELY then I'll be happy to help make it come true. CSCC'll Fix It For Whitelackington, p'raps!....

My little point is:

there seems to be stunning resistance to installing "P" bolts on Mendip

not long ago when The Northern Technique lot were trying to tighten up who could be a "P" bolter
there was outcry from The C.S.C.C. that we could not comply on Mendip
because there were not enough pitches to bolt.
Now there is an opportunity to bolt this recent through trip,
so why not go for it?

'Cos it doesn't need it?

So adding bolts to pitches just so Mendip can 'comply' with some artificial stipulation about how many pitches are suitable is a good reason?

Hughie,
Have you done the through trip?

Nope - but it's on the list to do shortly.

If Cap'n C says it's a NTR, then I'll quite happily take it that it is indeed a NTR.

Which bit would you suggest needs bolting? And why?
