Bernies ...

Hopefully it will continue as it is, first stop for food, kit and caving info in my book.

Driving around the Ingleton one way loop trying to avoid parking in the pay and display car park is always fun and the joy of a car spot right outside is not often equalled.

Ian B.

I bet it's YOU who's always parked right in front when I come looking for a parking place! :)

Nick's right - Steve just wants to retire, like Bernie before him. I hope somebody does invest in the business and continues with Bernies: a solid caving tradition in the Dales.

Judging by the number of holidays Steve enjoys (often to far-flung places), I suspect the business provides a reasonable profit!  ;)

I suspect that the reason both shops can exist is because they stock different brands, etc. and offer different deals

Another reason I suspect they both exist in such a small place is they sell via t'interweb.

Still, I shall miss seeing Steve's happy smiling face when he retires ::)

Maybe it will be happy and smiling once he retires and doesn't have to deal with us lot any more.

I currently run a small catering business and most of my holiday time is spent in Ingleton and the only place i will use is Bernies. Bernies and Inglesport are two different businesess and are run as such. The reason i use Bernies and many others do is so not to be confronted by a K2 (well ingleton waterfall) Goretex Clad Statue who knows f##k all about caving or Climbing and to meet like minded people which is almost a certainty and the menu is reasonably priced. This has got to be sold into caving as Ingleton without Bernies is like Lancaster without Easegill Really Crap for Caving. I might even buy it myself.

I have always got very good advice and service @ Inglesport, and it's where I have purchased most of my caving gear. I think saying that the staff (if I have understood correctly) know f*** all about caving is going a bit far. Alan even lent me a descender for the rest of the week when my Stop had cracked a bit in case it gave up on a trip  (y).

Bernies on the other hand was cheaper when I got myself a load of MR's so I got them there.

Francis, sorry for the misunderstanding the staff in Inglesport are very good i was talking about some of the clientelle we have bumped into in the past. No problem with inglesport but my loyalty has and always will be with bernies for obvious reasons.

My impression is that Bernies is a Kaff wot also sells Kit, whilst Inglethief is a Kit shop that also has a Kaff. I may be totally mistaken as to their respective business plans, but thats the impression I get.

My loyalty is in relation to BREAKFAST. Bernies wins hands down in my book, primarily in quality, although I also find Bernies a nicer environment in which to relax and enjoy it.

As for Kit, I usually end up with something from both!!!  ::)

You obviously don't know about the "Ingleton Cafe Wars" in the 80's!

Once upon a time there was a cafe which just sold food and next door but one (before the intervening shop was expaned into), a gear shop which just sold gear.

Then the gear shop opened a cafe and started selling food and some time later, the cafe then started selling gear...

I heard the story the other way round:

Once upon a time there was a cafe which just sold food and next door but one (before the intervening shop was expanded into), a gear shop which just sold gear.

Then the cafe  started selling gear and some time later, the gear shop opened a cafe ...

I suppose it depends on who is doing the telling ...

"i heard it's pauls way from the guy who got me into caving!"

Paul is correct (ish). It's because Bernies closes on a Tuesday and there was no where to get a brew and food on a Tuesday in Ingleton, so Inglesport started doing food.

But Bernies have always sold gear on a small scale, even though primarily it was a cafe. It was only following Inglesports move into catering that Steve significantly expanded his range.
