Reward Time;

Adam - There are two cool outdoor hats which would suit the youngsters who helped with the clean up in Ibbeth Peril here for you.  Remind me please.

Pete K - That effort is indeed worthy of a reward.  Would you like a Berger Book - or if you already have one perhaps something from our waterproof hat, glove and socks collection.  PM to discuss and arrange delivery.

Bratchley & AR - A thoughtful and fine effort.  Not quite enough on there own but if you post up another clean up you'll certainly be in the running for something.  Thank you

Alex - remember you also have some credit  :)

Well done to all.

We've brought out quite a lot of old digging gear from Notts 2 over the last year.  We knew where there was more abandoned stuff so decided to make a trip yesterday to see if it was still there and bring it out.  Sadly most of it was, so we packed up everything that could be dug out of the mud and carried it out of the cave.  I'm pretty sure no one will be missing it.  Here is a picture of what ended up in my car;  (y)

Eventually I'm going to have to give some rewards to those who are helping me but whilst they don't look on ukcaving enough they don't realise they are missing out.  ;)

Myself and a few members of the West Sussex Caving Club took a trip down Browne's cave on Saturday, and found it in a state with local hoodlum's having walked straight in with tobacco pouches, empty bottles, empty cans, crisp packets and aerosol cans all over the shop. Also some old bits of fabric and gloves etc.

We cleared the majority of the obvious litter and crap from the cave (up to the upstream section).

Picture to follow!

There is still more stuff to come out that looks like it's come from old digs (bits of tubing used for siphoning etc) so if anyone could confirm that it's still not required we will remove these on our return journey - possibly with a group of scouts helping out!

Thanks,
Josh

A little impromptu collection from Lost John's on Saturday. While waiting at the bottom of Valhalla, I had an explore and found a large length of plastic tubing abandoned at the base of an aven. Not having a spare tackle sack, it was perhaps a little ambitious to try to extract this from the cave, however we managed to bundle it up with a few slings and krabs and a team effort got it to the surface. The hardest part was untying all this with numb fingers in the blizzard on Leck Fell. A red sheep feed bucket completed the haul.
The tubing was later measured at 122 ft in length.

By the way, I'm not scratching my bum, I'm holding a tin of biscuits which would have looked incongruous in the photo.

Well done with the latest clean up in Lost Johns and Browne's Caves.

Adam - You already have a couple of rewards to collect.  Expect a little something extra.

JoshW - You and the team join Alex, Bratchley and AR with a big credit for the next time you post your conservation effort on here.

It has been suggested to me to post this here. So here it is, apologies those who have already seen this etc...

A while back probably before I joined Blackrose we enrolled on the descent adopt a cave scheme. We have been in there in the past and done minor tidy ups of general rubish and documenting formations, however it has always been debatable on what to do with the old floor boards of the show cave. A group were planning to clear it out known as the "Little Green men", however they did not fancy diving into the water to remove the wood from the deep sections, which needed the most attention. So they asked us, being our "adopted cave". These bits of wood and metal in this section are in the way and are just in complete disarray and prove quite hazardous. We have moved the wood to a larger chamber for a further trip by another LGM later on to remove these pieces out of the cave, as they have the trailer to shift it off the hill. Just to be clear all the in-situ board walks on the "dry side" are still there we currently have no plans to remove them. I think these still add to the experience of the trip, but I guess those too will eventually have to be removed at some point when they become too rotten.

Here is a quick photo of the wood and metal we moved, note the floor drops down under the stuff so its about twice as high.

That's the spirit, Alex.  This together with your other efforts on Provy/Dow deserve our top prize - an Exped Work and Rescue, 50l, waterproof rucksack.  How you reconcile this with your caving mates is up to you but you're the one posting  ;)  Perhaps you could share it between you to hump some more rubbish.  (y)

Alex and friends involvement with clearing up in Skirwith Cave looks like a great conservation effort (and the video seems to support that).  It is worthy of a reward especially considering his previous solo effort.

If you are doing further work in there, let's hear about it on here.  I'm sure the LGM are well overdue a reward.  Remember to be eligible you have to post about your efforts on this thread and include photos where possible.  One of the main ideas behind the scheme is that publicising conservation efforts, and making it the norm rather than the exception, will encourage others to do the same.

Good luck on Saturday.

The attached pictures are from my recent visit to Low Douk. This is from my second day  with a friend helping me to carry the rubbish out. On the first day there, I did not have a car, so had to leave the dug out rubbish covered and under a rock to come back to.

On the second day alone, we hauled out 3 and a half  inglesport/bernie sized bags full of rubbish all of them metal work that were stuck deep within the mud and rocks. These were mainly at  Daylight Series and some even continuing to the wet passage route to the right. It required a lot of digging out.  They were all heavy metal items, including galvanised wire ,rotting iron work, metal plates even what looked like some kind of car/vehicle parts??

At the weekend our club "Devon and Cornwall Mine Explorers Group" paid a visit to Browns Folly near Bath with the aim to clear the Square Well of rubbish, vandalism and the boulders thrown in by some of the local numptys. First task was draining the well so we could get to it all, this involved a bucket and a lot of grunt. An hour and a half later we could stand on the rubble pile without wet feet. most the boulders in the well were too large and heavy to lift between three of us, so some were broken down and the lot removed. A few bits of toilet paper, some shoes, beer cans and a few other miscellaneous bits of rubbish were also removed from the bottom before we cleared the silt. After this the graffiti on one of the well walls was scraped off and covered to match the original colour of the well wall. All in all it was about 4-5 hours work, the waste rock pulled from the well moved a great distance away so it wont find its way back in.
We will return shall we ever be needed there again!

Notts 2

Over the past few months we have had a number of trips into Notts 2 - a very fine cave indeed.  Sadly we found more collections of old digging gear rusting away.  This was gear that we had noticed several years ago and still lay in the same places untouched.  Much of it is an eyesore to those wishing to enjoy the cave and we have treated it as abandoned.

IMG_0593_zpsyzve4zx0.jpg

Most of this was from the inlet 5 area.

IMG_0714_zpszfrlsv0g.jpg

An assortment of tools from various locations.

IMG_0717_zpsruyxgscn.jpg

One of five or six drag trays and ropes from long abandoned locations.  They weren't this clean originally, of course, but this is the only one worth keeping which wasn't knackered.

This is our second effort in Notts 2 and there is still more down there, and lets not even mention other caves.  :(
Would clubs, groups and individuals please think about the gear they have left behind and make this the year to finally bring it all out.

.... especially as it's Eurospeleo this year and UK cavers may be harshly judged by our visiting overseas compatriots!....

Had a nice trip into Ease Gill via Pool Sink on Saturday and something shiny caught my eye in magpie chamber.

Turned out to be the packaging from some flash bulbs placed high up and almost out of reach...  :(

In this day of high powered lamps and waterproof compact cameras who would need to use flash bulbs for a chamber this size? make you wonder how long it had been sat there  Almost made me ashamed to be associated with cave photography, but only for a very brief second.

Hardly deserving of a prize but a useful post to bump the scheme

Slightly Upsetting news is that our recent efforts in the Square Well in browns has started to be undone. Partys and unwanted visitors continue to throw rubbish and leave "unwanted organic waste" in the well. Sometimes i wander what good we have actually done when T***s like that destroy such a lovely feature...
